For the uninformed, lifetime traffic means for the lifetime of the unit as determined by Tomtom. That doesn't mean that in 10 years you can expect freem map updates.
Also, Mazda now puts Tomtom gps units in their vehicles. If you've ever owned a Mazda with gps, you can appreciate why this is a good thing. My wife has a CX 9 and the gps is horrendous. And a DVD update costs $200. Last edited by Deadwing; 02-03-2013 at 07:15 AM.. Reason: . |

Some confusion on exactly what model the Walmart one is and if it does include lifetime maps & traffic. This is concerning the 4.3 in one, not the 5 in that is the subject of this thread. |

Hope that TomTom has improved their map/directions since I last used it ~3+ years ago. Traveling from NJ to Long Island TomTom would try to route me *through midtown Manhattan*. Something like "Lincoln Tunnel, across Manhattan, down a few blocks, and through the Queens Midtown tunnel to the LIE". It was utterly ridiculous, and Google Maps knew better than to do that, but for some reason my TomTom had no concept of "horrible NYC traffic".
Now I just use Android's Nav. |

Does anyone know if Tomtom's have a "avoid/prefer highways" setting? I had this on a old no name GPS and loved it. My current Garmin does not have this feature and I can't understand why. If I'm on the west side of a major city and want to get to the east side, it will route me through downtown, 100 traffic lights, traffic, 50 turns, small alleys, when I could just take the major highway around and be 10 times faster with less hassle. I live near a highway, and sometimes if I want to get to a place near me, it will take me out of the way onto the highway to get somewhere that going direct would be way faster. Either way, I miss that option for such a setting and having a little control over the route. If Tomtom has hat, I would jump.

I was one of the ones that discounted using a phone for GPS vs. getting stand alone GPS so I have a Garmin that works great. But my 13 year old has a HTC EVO 4G that he is using as an Android player and it has turn by turn directions without cell service. 4.7 inch screen. If you have a current or even older smart phone laying around, you may not actually need this. Especially if you are using it only it only occasionally.

Do any of these allow, "route through" so that if I don't like the route (like down the east coast I95 rather than I79) I can just pick Pittsburg and tap "route through"?
My 14 year old Pocket PC using Mapopolis (out of business long ago) lets me do that. So I haven't upgraded. The roads haven't changed that much. |

Yeah, I had an old Navman that had this and my wife liked the routings it took. None of the Garmins seem to have this and I too am curious if TomTom or Magellan (or anyone for that matter) have the option to prefer highways.

If say a Ipad get price mistaked from $500 to $200. And word gets around to SD and there like 5000+ orders. do you REALLY expect your order to go through... ESPECIALLY if you are one of those dirtbags that order 20+ to flip on ebay. as a smaller merchant, if say 20 orders and each one is like one or two pieces I would let it go through on good will but not when there is a SD effect on it and I have to shipp out 10k pieces at a loss to each... =================================
My days as a sales person @ bestbuy Customer: This stupid phone I bought last week won't work right Me: So it's the phone thats stupid and not you right? Customer: I'm looking for an easy way to access my media files with my laptop when I'm in the yard. Me: Sports Authority is having a sale on walking shoes. |
