TomTom XL 335SE is Traffic ready , needs an extra accessory to work with traffic.

Why would anyone buy a stand alone GPS nowadays instead of using an Android phone with real time traffic and real time nsa sponsored map updates?
Because some of us don't have or even want an Android phone, lol. I've been using TracFone exclusively for years & it's all I really need. I just use it for texting & an occasional call now & then & it's all I need a cell for really.

I don't do a lot of traveling & don't really need this but I got one anyway. Seems like a good starter GPS at the right price to check one out. My car supposedly came with GPS but it turned out to be a compass & temp gauge instead. Perhaps I'm trying to compensate for that particular lie the dealership told me, lol.

I just picked mine up from Walmart and called TomTom and told them it's useless to me unless I have Canada and she updated mine to include lifetime maps of US/Canada/Mexico. I thought that was great customer service.

I called and they said the USA/Canada map could not be put on the 50m. I'll try calling again, see if a different rep knows what works.

I called the customer service number and told her I needed Canada as I live near the border and she said it wasn't a problem, but she'd have to give me mexico, too. She stayed on the phone with me and we connected the device to my computer, she waited while I created a user account, I gave her my email and I gave her a number off the side of my box and the number for the lifetime maps that came in the box. We had to delete everything off the TomTom to make room for the new "update" then we went to the "update lifetime maps" section of the TomTom website and the North America update was there and I downloaded it. She was great, her name is Alejandra.

Can anyone confirm daolincheng's statement that it doesn't support spoken street names? Thank you.

Im kinda sadden by this product...the sensitivity is horrible...you have to press pretty hard to get it to work...i have a 3" tom tom and no problems with that besides the fact it doesnt have qwerty...but hey 5" with lane assist and free map updates is good enough

I also called and said I made frequent trips to Canada, and that I really needed that in a GPS. At first the rep said I could return it and get the 55. I told him I would just return it. I asked him if he was sure there was nothing he could do. Then he said we could put North America on and he guided me thru the process.

If I'm understanding the directions correctly you have to use a "computer" voice for it to speak street names. Mine came with 4 voices...3 "actor" voices & 1 computer which it says is a "computer voice".

Included paperwork was very vague but I found the manual at the TomTom site:

http://download.tomtom.com/open/m...-en-US.pdf

On page 22 it says:

Voices

Your navigation device is able to provide spoken instructions and warnings using voices
which are stored on the device. Some voices have been recorded by actors and other voices are computer-generated. The recorded voices are only used for spoken instructions while the computer voices are used for both spoken instructions and for reading aloud information stored on your map, such as street names.

**********

Something I was disappointed in was it clearly says on the box it also comes with Free Fuel Prices & TomTom Roadside Assistance. After installing the TomTom Home program to update the maps, it says these 2 features aren't included with my model #. Unless I'm not understanding how to add them?

I've only used it a couple times so far but seems like a decent unit.
