Good deal if you like the Amazon.com world. If you don't, why hate, just go buy a different tablet.
I myself went to the dark side (Apple) and bought an iPad long ago and recently upgraded to the iPad 4.
Every tablet and system has it's pros and cons. This isn't life and death stuff.
Buy what you can afford and for what you will use it most. Life is short. Enjoy!

It's true that the next big thing in tablets is always just around the corner, but that's true with almost any piece of technology--TVs, cameras, smart phones, video games, computers, cars, etc.

If it's something you want, you've got to take the plunge at some point and not worry too much about what's coming next, otherwise you'll be on the sidelines forever, waiting and waiting but never enjoying. If you're a gadget enthusiast, that's no fun.

Life is indeed short. Which is why we talk about this stuff to get the most out of a tablet.

Otherwise we'd all be mindless fanboys.

Unfortunately it is usually the same mindless dialogue and debate ad nauseum with these and Apple threads.
Some people put more time, emotion, and energy in buying or debunking the "perfect" tablet or cell phone than they do their actual life.

I am simply saying $300-$500 is not going to change most people's lives here. Define a budget for the tablet, define how you will use it most, pick a model, and go buy it.
Move beyond the nonsense and rhetoric. Truth is at the end of the day most tablets do essentially the same things and are used the same way for similar purposes by most consumers.
But hey, debate for hours if that's what you're into.

Do you find smart phones to be a waste too? Because that logic equally applies to smart phones.

Why not just spend the money to buy a device that is capable of performing all the tasks that you're looking for? If you take that approach, then you don't have to worry about always wanting to get the newest gadget since your current one still does everything you originally purchased it for.

I presume but there comes a point when you have an opening to make that decision and that is not right now. I say stay on the sidelines for now if you can wait.. pick up the 1st or 2nd gen tablets to help you with the wait. Especially tablets with windows 8 on them ... also computers are easily upgradable

Correction: the time is not right now for you.

As we can all agree, there is always something better in the pipeline. These are luxury devices; people rarely ever need a tablet, so it's always possible to wait. It's just a matter of whether you want to or not. And that all depends on whether your enjoyment of having a device now--whether current generation or previous generation--is going to outweigh any buyer's remorse you may experience from not having the newest, shiniest thing for however long you intend to keep it before upgrading. It's a different analysis for everyone based on their individual preferences and price sensitivity. That is not debatable.

Personally, I would not want an original Kindle Fire or Nook Color/Tablet, iPad 1st gen or iPad 2, even on the cheap, when I can pay just a little more and get a current generation tablet that will keep me happy for longer. If you have a decent paying job, some of these things are so relatively cheap, I see no point in waiting (unless you've already identified an item in the pipeline that you do want). I agree I would not want to spend $900 on a Surface Pro running Windows 8, but that's just me, and it doesn't mean others shouldn't. Of course, YMMV.

Been dropping some not-so-subtle hints @ hubby to get me this... now there's NO EXCUSE!!!

I play Need for Speed on our kindle's and it does great and graphics look great. Not a big gamer though.

Please keep this thread on topic. Arguing, name calling, etc will be removed.
