Pictures, and Sears description, make it clear that you get 8 wrenches in 8 different sizes. Each wrench combines an open end and ratcheting box end wrenches for a given size.

It's "dual ratcheting" because it has a ratcheting box end AND a ratcheting open end.

GearWrench does make dual box end ratcheting wrenches though with two different ratcheting box end sizes on each wrench.

I have older autoparts store branded ones with just the closed end ratcheting, and it’s great, but I always wished the open-end was ratcheting too.

OK, I went back to the Sears page and... yes, indeedy, when you enlarge the picture of the open end, it has a notch on one side and has four faces instead of the usual three, so you can indeed get ratchety with it.

Read a few reviews this time. I see that it could be a godsend if you run f-connectors all day, like one reviewer, or are running B-Nuts (flare nuts) a lot or other special cases where you can't use a box end but an open end is just s-l-o-w. (For hydraulic or air fittings, use a proper flare wrench to break torque - that first 1/8th turn when it breaks loose. Use open-end or box wrench to break free tight bolts & nuts, then use this wrench. )

So, I'm wrong. It exists. The slightly ridiculous sounding "ratcheting open-end wrench" is well rated in customer reviews. The few low ratings are gripes about · "made in China," · only 8 sizes, · slightly thicker and more expensive than equivalent GearWrench brand, · or the fact that the notched side breaks when you bear down on this tool (Well, duh. See my comment about using the right tool to torque or to break free a tight fastener).

You should look up the earlier designs of the ratcheting open-end wrench, Craftsman had it a loooong time ago under the name Craftsman QuickWrench, sets of which you can still get on ebay for dirt cheap, and are made in the USA.

I do remember those. I always figured it was probably either an inferior ratchet or a second class open end wrench. Or both.

After this thread, I'll grant you it has its niche, but for most use I can't see myself reaching for it first.

Don't know, 'cause I also can't see myself dropping 2 x ~$35 to find out (and still only having 8 std. and 8 metric sizes).

All this feels close to thread crapping, which is not my intent.

We can share what works, what we find useful, what has quality or not, but in the end some of this just boils down to personal preference. Don't think this would be mine.

Not mine either, but this is what's available for now with a warranty behind it.

I prefer the QuickWrench for this kind of stuff and have a set, but not everyone knows about them.

True. Buy something like this from, say, Harbor Freight and you're soon on your own.

Can't place the QuickWrench. Search for the tradename "QuickWrench" yields much noise.

I'm sort of picturing an open end like tool, with one arm on a pivot.

Even the HF wrenches have a lifetime warranty now.

Search on ebay for "Craftsman QuickWrench", you'll find them.

They are the Craftsman raised panel wrenches, but with this style of ratcheting open end, minus the gimmicky plastic holder thing. The real awesome part is they are long like the Craftsman Professional polished wrenches, so the box end is great for stuck nuts/bolts, the open end is great for speedy loosening/tightening. Keep in mind this was years before the GearWrench.

considering this is made in China - you might as well just go to HF and buy them there for 1/4 of the price. the set from HF comes with a lifetime warranty too and at the going rate - HF will outlive Sears most likely. Craftsman will live on, true...but when Sears tumbles where will you go for a warranty replacement.

i really go out of my way to buy USA made products - making these in China is a disgrace. it's so unlike Craftsman and i wonder why all of their hex wrenches are made in the USA and then this set is made in China.

It's made in China because it's just a rebadged GearWrench product.

Like I already mentioned, if you want USA-made ratcheting wrenches, look for the old Craftsman QuickWrench on ebay. There are brand new sets for sale at clearance prices.

metric keeps coming up as $59.99 for me, even at checkout. is it dead or do I need to login/missing something to get $34.99?
