What to look for when buying used iPhone 4s?
Hello. Buying a used iPhone 4S for use with Sprint. Per apple.com, the unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.What do I need to look for when buying a used iPhone 4S?
When checking this morning, I have seen used iPhone 4S 16GB range from $130t to $200. Any help is appreciated. |

As far as functionality, you could meet the seller in a public place that has WiFi, such as Starbucks or Panera, and then just visit a few websites. Check to make sure there's a serial # on the back of the phone - if not, it's a good clue that it's been dropped and had the housing replaced (possibly with inferior materials). You can also check to see if there is any Apple Warranty remaining here: https://selfsolve.apple
With any other phone manufacturer, the carrier isn't likely to honor the warranty if the phone is no longer being used by the original owner, but Apple is much better about transferring it. Twice I've had phones replaced in the Apple Store that I purchased secondhand - and one I even forgot to un-jailbreak prior to taking it in, and it was obvious, but the Genius didn't bat an eye. |

1) yes check ESN 2) go to settings>general>about to check correct capacity ( I had people try to sell an 8/16gb when they said it was 16/32gb) 3)while you're in settings get the serial and check for warranty 4)functionality checks - make sure home button isn't "stuck" or difficult to use to turn on phone. Make sure the volume ringer on/off switch works and vibrates when you switch it. Go to the settings>sounds and max out the vol and play something. (You wan the speakers to work) When swiping the screen, does the response feel fluid/smooth or is it lagging/delayed? Does camera work? A lot of these are just things I look for just cause I'm picky and I feel like something is wrong with the phone which is why they are getting rid of it. But that's just my mentality when buying from CL 5)Cosmestic condition - check screen for scratches/cracks along edge. Dead pixels? Max out the brightness of the screen load white webpage or black page to check. Hope that helps!

make sure the seller or yourself erases the entire phone including all apps and contacts.

1) Mechanical Inspection:
a) Look for all button functionality, any sticky buttons or if the switches are misaligned or raised BAD b) look for the water indicators, RED = BAD c) Look at the headphone jack and plug in your own headphone, any broken or rust=BAD 1c) any wiggle I would see how much play=alot of play=bad d) Theirs a screen test, available as an APP or you download the images to the photo reel. The colors are solid, and they should reveal, any broken or stuck pixels. e) Test the vibrate button. It should have a familiar click and absolutely no wiggle/play d) INSPECT dock. Any charred marks indicate electrical abuse. Pattern long scratches are normal since they happen as result of the dock connector. 2) Hardware Inspection: a) Test the ringer, by calling hearing, then pluging in headphones to see if it works simulataneously b) Call someone not near you. See if they can hear you clearly. Then try Speakerphone. c) Try connecting to a public wifi network d) B-tooth E) Finally inspect the diagnostics log of the iPhone. If it has any panic.plist files stay away=hardware faults. (do note if a reset has been done, the logs are erased). F) Camera see both are working, and can record video with audio. Thats probably all i can think of. Ill post more if i can think of anything else |
