this one was on my wish list on amazon but 20 dollars more. this is superior to the WD green drives as a secondary drive, right?

This is the drive with 3x 1tb/platter drives which is good.

Disagree that Seagate isn't great quality. You do know that Western Digital and Seagate are pretty much it now, right? Toshiba is still making drives, but really only because WD couldn't acquire Hitachi without selling off some manufacturing plants.

WD and Seagate spend their time leapfrogging each other in capacity, speed, or features like longer lifetime for enterprise drives. Both make high quality drives, and they either bankrupted or bought out all their competitors for this reason. Neither wants to give up what's left of the spinning platter market, so neither of them is letting quality slip.

I need two more 3TB HDDs, so will be watching closely the sales... I think I will pull a trigger as soon as it reaches 95-100 with no sales tax and FS lol

All the drives I have owned in last 20 years which failed were Seagate and Maxtor. Seagate was better before they purchased the crap quality Maxtor. My last Seagates were the 1tb 7200.11 which had 4 Die within one week of owning.

All drives have issues. I think Seagate has higher fail rate and coupled with the shorter warranty (or is it back to 2 years?) I won't touch them. Why bother with Suckgate when in 20 years of WD they all worked perfectly and for decades in one case ? Look at this drive, lots of failure reports, strange noises that come from the drive even after a firmware update to lower the "chirping" noise.

I've gone through 7 WD Hard drives, all have failed within 5 years of ownership, and half within 3. I've owned 13 Seagate drives and not had a single failure. 3 of those drives have been on for the last 2 and half years non stop.

I still have two 250gb IDE WD's in my new PC (connected with pci card) that have been the most reliable drives I've ever had, been used for about ten years in PCs on almost 24/7... they don't make drives like they used to.

FranSysco is sort of making my point here already. This is all anecdotal. I've had drives from almost every manufacturer, including WD and Seagate since they bought everyone out. I've never had a single personally-owned drive fail before I retired it. However, I have lots of computer geek buddies, and they've had plenty of failures between them from any and every manufacturer. Same goes in my IT experience over the years.

Industry statistics tell us that personal experience means nothing here. Ignoring a few odd situations (e.g. the IBM "DeathStar" drives), on average most of the drives from manufacturers that were still around in the last 10 years or so have been good. Likewise, failure rates among hard drive manufacturers tend to be about the same.

So don't buy Seagate if you've had bad experience. Just know that for every person like you who says "Seagate sucks," there's somebody saying the same about WD. Both you and that other guy are wrong, according to the data at large.
