As someone else pointed out, one use is for a homeowner who doesn't want to climb a tree with a gas powered chainsaw to cut down some limbs. I've used them in the past by just tying a cord to each end, add a weight to the cord, toss it over the offending limb, and cut it while standing on the ground. Much safer for the average occasional chainsaw user...

And for residents in storm prone areas, good to have on hand so you don't waste gas you could be running your generator with if gas stations are closed and you've got to clear some branches away.
