AARP Has an online Driver Safety Course here...

http://www.aarpdriversafety.com/

Using the coupon code BHM2013 the course is only $5
The coupon for the online class seems to work whether you're a member or not.

Discounts vary from state to state. May need to contact your insurance provider for more info. Here is some more info from the AARP website (note: some states require insurance companies to discount insurance after a drivers safety class). http://www.aarp.org/home-garden/t...ounts.html

60 days to complete the 4- to 8-hour course (spread out, if you want).
The $5 offer, in honor of Black History Month, looks like it expires on Feb. 28.

If this was already posted, my apologies... searched, didn't find anything.

See if your state qualifies
http://www.aarp.org/home-garden/transportation/info-05-2010/auto_insurance_discounts.html

In CA, Geico provides discounts up to 5% only
- if you are over 50 and
- complete the course voluntarily.

In CT, Liberty Mutual discounts 8% if
- You are over 56 years and
- Complete the AARP course.

In IL, Esurance. 10% off Body and Injury liability for 3 years.
---55 and older

In Pa: Nationwide discounts 5% if you're 55 or older if you complete this AARP course. [source my NW agent told me]

Same in VA

Linky [geico.com]
Same in UT http://www.geico.com/information/states/ut/defensive-driver/

Had some problems while taking course and when I called the help number they told me not to use IE but they were recommending people use Chrome.

Please keep this thread on topic. Political commentary belongs in the podium, not the deals forum. Thank you!

Totally awesome SD! I have been putting off taking this online safety course ( I took it as a class at the Library a few years ago) and it usually costs 24.95$ from the other companies that offer it... saved 20$ as well as the savings on my premiums for three years! BTW, I am in NY and the charge was only 5$ ...the discount code takes off 22.95 from the 19.95 regular fee! Repped OP!

I just called me insurance to ask how much the discount was, they said $6. Not worth it.
Six dollars for every 6 months? For how long as well? 2 x 3yrs x $6 = 36 bucks. 3 yrs because that's how long it says it is good for. Oh wait, I forgot already... LOL

I took it in person about 8 years ago....I assume the online course is not much different. There are several videos, and you do take a quiz/test at the end....but you can't fail.... laugh out loud

Plus doing it online you can break it up at your convenience....when I took it in person it took up my whole Saturday EEK!

Back in my day we didn't have this dadblamed interweb driving course nonsense. We just cranked up the Model T and headed into town for provisions every 3 months like the rest of 'em. Damn kids get off my yard.

Course is pretty painful to sit through. It's timed to meet the course length requirement, and seems to take longer unless you can click "next" right when it becomes available. But when they put up a simple slide that takes 10 seconds to read but force you to look at it for much longer, it's hard to sit there waiting for the "next" to become available. I feel I could learn the same content in much, much less time. But I understand why they do that.

In the end, I'm not sure it was worth the small discount received on car insurance from taking it.

I don't know what the guys talking about with the 6 dollar savings not being worth it....maybe he lives in a state with extremely cheap insurance. In NY, the savings over three years from taking this course would easily be 100-140$
