Looking for a server to run a few VMs
So im looking for a server to run a few Virtual Machines on. Most i would be running at a time would be like 3, so i dont need anything too crazy.Im thinking of a box with about 16 GB Ram, an ok processor. Other than that i am open. I wouldnt need a monitor as i will likely just remote into it. I would like to keep this under $1000 if possible. Refurbished is ok. Any suggestions? Should i build something or can i buy something prebuilt? not building something would be ideal, however, i would consider building it if there would be a significant price discount. Thanks in advance. |

Well, you can go 2 ways - buy an actual server, or just get a desktop machine with a lot of RAM. Difference is the server will be designed to be a server - running 24x7, high quality power supply, xeon processor. For this, I'd recommend a Dell PowerEdge T110 - http://configure.us.dell.com/dell...cs=ussoho1
Take the base config, upgrade the processor to Xeon E3-1220v2 3.10 GHz and bump the RAM to 2x8GB, and you're out the door for $858 + tax, shipped free. You might consider bumping the warranty from 1 to 3 years for an extra $83. A desktop will be cheaper, but won't be built like a server. For light usage, this probably won't make a difference. For this, I'd recommend an Optiplex 790 or 7010 from the Dell Outlet [dell.com] - look for an i5 & don't worry about amount of RAM, because that's cheaper to upgrade after the fact (I like Crucial.com, but you can find it cheaper elsewhere). Optiplexes are nice because they come standard with 3 years of on-site warranty. I would pass on building your own - that's really not a cost savings without sacrificing a lot of quality. |
