I was about to buy this combo with the MOTOROLA SB5101U SURFboard Cable Modem [newegg.com] from this thread instead.

I have basic Time Warner roadrunner. Can anyone tell me what the better deal would be for me? I think I'm mainly concerned with the quality of the modem. The package in this thread would cost about $23 more. Is it worth it to spend a little more? Thanks for any help.

6141 is docis 3.0, which will make it easier to resell if/when the time comes.

Here's a direct link to the router part of this deal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6833127358

It's reviews at Amazon manage to be worse [amazon.com]. I particularly enjoy the 1 x 5 star review to 11 x 1 star review ratio.

Get the one in this thread, because it's DOCSIS 3.0 compliant. You don't want the other one - it's DOCSIS 2.0.

Though on basic, I would still suggest getting a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant modem for the sake of future proofing (Time Warner themselves are phasing out that model you linked to). That said, I'd take that router over the one part of this deal (with the Surfboard 6141) simply for the sake of DD-WRT support if nothing else.

i was gonna post this deal but saw the reviews on the router. i'd rather get the modem for $10 less on amazon.

i would do some research (and pose this question) on the DSL Reports site. i just recently switched from DSL to TWC and was going to buy the black version of this modem on Amazon. i had actually placed the order and then after reading several threads in the TWC section of the website i cancelled the order. my understanding is that with just the basic package (15 down 1 up) you also get the "speed boost" which pushes your downstream speed up to and over 20Mbps for the first few minutes of a connection. several people confirmed that you only get this boost with the DOCSIS 2.0 modems. the 6141's will not boost over the 15Mbps speed. however, they are more reliable at maintaining a constant 15Mbps connection since they are using multiple streams. my current 2.0 modem scores between 20 and 25Mbps on every bandwidth test i run so i am not going to buy a 3.0 modem until i decide to upgrade my speed package.

hope this helps

good luck with that. i found out that my current package has been upgraded from 3mbps to 20mbps for the same price.

can't upgrade online. only offers a "triple play" package with a home phone i have no use for.

chatted with multiple reps.. internet speed isn't considered an "upgrade" so they refuse to let me up my internet speed. said i would have to cancel and start a new agreement.

catch: if you cancel you can't re-activate service for 3 months. MadMadMad
