I was looking for an answer to this question myself when shopping for a 3.0 modem.
I went with the 6121 since i had a staples coupon and got it for $70.
the only difference is the 8 downstream channels on the 6141 vs 4 on the 6121.
giving the 6141 the ability to reach 300mbps. other than that i dont know what other advantages the extra 4 channels brings.
No advantages, no US operator provides residential speeds capable of maxing 4 channels, let alone 8.

is it possible to keep old account activated and open new one under different name. How can you transfer modem ? Is there a comcast website where it asks for account number and you can provide new account number to be linked with modem which is already registered ?
You can't have 2 account under same address unless its under the same name and one is bossiness account and the other is residential. What you have to do if you have an exisiting account is to cancel it and turn in that equipment then have someone else call in and order the same thing but with your own surfboard modem and in 2 months call in to have it transfer into your name.

when do they perform if the address already has an account ? when you call them to add new account ? Other question is if I dont rent equipment then is there a way to transfer account on my modem ?

When you call and try to add another account when existing account is active then it throws a red flag. You used to be able to just call in and get your modem swapped for your own with no problem but lately i hear it's harder to do so. I would just call in and ask if you can do that before you try the other method.

Just activate it under someone else name then transfer it back to yours. Wink
About the only thing my ex wife was good for... laugh out loud

The router looks terrible and I didn't see anything about dd-wrt for it, although I didn't look hard. They did release a 1.01 firmware just a few days ago and it lists some fixes but not sure if they have any bearing on the bad wifi reports.

Looks like it'd be okay as a wired router, but the wireless sucks. Pretty amazing that a company can put out a product that simply doesn't work well in a major regard, and it makes it all the way to being marked down and sold as a freebie with another product. I think they were getting $100+ for the router originally.

Congestion avoidance. If your local cable plant is equipped for 8+4 then you have more downstream channels for the modem to choose from...if a bunch of 4 channel docsis 3.0 modems choke up a few of their channels, you can use other ones. You get the same little boost going from a docsis 2 to a 4 channel docsis 3. Its a little better during busy times in the morning and after school/work.

ordered mine from ebay and got it in under 2 days...quick shipping. Itme looks good but in some sort of retail box. Works absolutely fine. My cable speeds were 24/4 earlier now up to 35/6

btw, works fine with Comcast. I had to call and get the MA ID added to account

I also got my new black 6141 today in the mail from a highly-recommended eBay seller for $65.

To all the new purchasers of the 6141:

1. Who is your ISP?
2. What is your 6141's current firmware version?

I'm with Comcast and here's my modem info..

Model Name: SB6141
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.8-SCM01-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot(25CLK) 1.0.12.18m3
Hardware Version: 7.0
Firmware Build Time: Aug 30 2012 15:35:46

Would be smart to compare our hardware versions.

Search on eBay for "sb6141 faster", the seller should be modems-modems with 100% positive feedback. Make offer for $65.

Not surprising. I'm sure the guy has been bombarded at the $65 (including shipping) price, so he's probably looking for at least $70 or so now. He also delivers each of his transactions within 2 days, so his reputation is excellent. His info has been posted in numerous threads here, so his stock level must be quite low now. laugh out loud
