stupid ComcASS triple play. any deals on a telephony modem?
I am tech challenged and confused. I have Comcast phone, tv and internet(Performance with power boost) but no longer want to rent the modem. Will the 6141 work for me or do I need a telephone modem also? Also would I have to replace my router if I get a new modem. Apologize for my lack of knowledge.

The 6141 will not work for you since it's a data modem only. You will need a dual modem for data and telephony. There are a few different combo modems like this that Comcast supports, I'd search eBay for the best deals on them since many reputable sellers on there offer them brand new for well below retail/Amazon price.

You will not need a new router just because you replace your modem.

I also got my new black 6141 today in the mail from a highly-recommended eBay seller for $65.

Search on eBay for "sb6141 faster", the seller should be modems-modems with 100% positive feedback. Make offer for $65.

No problem. Mine arrived very quickly and I got it set up a couple days ago. It did take about 2 hours because TWC was being retarded... but it's done now. My bill will go down by $9/mo because I won't have to pay the $4 rental fee and they renewed my $5 turbo promo for me too.

Cool, glad you were able to get one and good luck with yours. I'm on Comcast and no complaints thus far.

Looking for a new modem (Internet only) and came across this refurbished Linksys DPC3008-CC for $50 at the Cisco site.

http://store.linksys.com/en-us/Ca...ewprod.htm

Any opinions on which is better - the SB6141 or the DPC3008-CC ?

I would go for the 6141 for $20 more without a doubt. It won't be refurbished, and it won't be comcast-only. The 6141 is basically the golden standard in data-only cable modems right now, these were going for $120 a couple months back after TWC announced their modem rental fee. I'd take a new one over a refurbished cisco modem any day.

Thanks - I'll go with the 6141 then.

i dont know what other advantages the extra 4 channels brings.
There seems to be a persistent level of misinformation about the benefits of docsis 3 vs docsis 2, mostly that under a certain speed level the docsis 3 modem has no benefits.

Fortunately, that is completely untrue. Besides having the ability to use more than one channel to avoid channel congestion, you're likely to get a better signal lock and a better level of reliability.

Docsis 2 modems are assigned to a single channel by the isp. When that channel congests with other users data, you get to sit there and suffer with it. With a docsis 3 modem, it'll move traffic to a lesser used channel.

You're also getting regular firmware updates from the isp for the 6xxx series. I doubt they bother pushing much to the older docsis 2 modems.

Many cable operators have at least some multiple channel capability, and I would imagine that within the next 18 months most will be offering at least enough channels for a 6121, but I'd spend the extra couple of bucks and get the 8 channel 6141 and have a good modem for ~5+ years.

Interesting on the Comcast Device info list the 6121 has 3 stars while the 6120 & 6141 are only 1.
(yet all 3 have the 3 other boxes checked)

http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/d...o=&sc=1289

Wonder why Comcast does not like the 6141 as much as the 6120?
(at least on those charts) Maybe time to take the plunge & then sell off the 6121 !?!
