OCZ old reputation just never dies with some ppl. I've got an agility 3 running for 9 months without problems. Can't TU or TD this deal since I've seen this at $80 many months ago but ssd prices has creeped up after BF.
don't listen to the samsung elitists. I bought 3 OCZ Vertex III SSDs 128gb during black Friday. 2 are installed on my main computer and the third one is on my laptop. After being patched with the latest firmware they run flawlessly....this was 3 months ago. If one of them was going to fail then the sweet spot time would have already passed
and I'm not trying to make it into a case study of me ME ME MY EXPERIENCE ONLY. Vertex III are very reliable. the fail rate may be double what the samsungs is, but what is 2% fail vs 1%?
Everyone who says "there's better out there for the money" hasn't checked prices recently. They've been going back up. SURE, they were all cheaper last november, but last I checked it's impossible to go back to last november.
The Crucial m4 is $120, the Samsung 830 is $130. Don't bother searching for the $80 price they're supposedly sold at.
If you doubt me, search for those drives on slickdeals and you won't find any recent deals at that price: they're just not out there anymore. All the excess stock that drove prices down seems to have dried up a bit, and prices have stabilized a little higher than they were before.
I bought one of these, because
a) I want an SSD now, not in 6 months
b) The vertex line of OCZ's drives doesn't suffer the compressible/non-compressible performance variations that the Agility line does
c) The price is competitive, even if it's not the greatest its ever been
d) I'm not a brand alcolyte like most of the people here on slickdeals seem to be ("samsung rulz, my 830 is the best ever, even if performance has been shown to tank as it fills up")
and, @d_crome, did you even READ to the end of the article you linked to? from the conclusions page...
"So now, four months after its release, the Vertex 4 series seems to have got rid of serious downsides. There are no unresolved problems with its hardware and firmware and its performance weaknesses have been corrected. Now, these SSDs seem to have become a very attractive option, especially as OCZ offers them at highly appealing prices and with a 5-year warranty."
I own both Vertex 3's and 4's BEST money I ever spent. Not even one issue with these drives. I read the horror stories though... the bottom line is...if there IS A PROBLEM will OCZ stand up and make it right...5yr warranty on the 4's...cant beat that so long as they stand behind it...time will tell. Still not a bad deal for IMO a good drive...from power on to desktop and all apps loaded in less than 15sec. SMOKIN!
OCZ has gotten better from the worst SSD company it was. All the OCZ 3 level crap was absolute junk. They would send you a replacement and it was busted still in the retail clamshell. The OCZ 4 stuff it better, but in no way reliable, don't waste your money people. Check the OCZ forums before buying.
