suggestions on a good mutual fund? what kind of yearly return can one expect? can i buy through my scottrade account?

i remember the vanguard intermediate-term bond etf being recommended to a newbie on here but there is also the vanguard total stock mutual fund,,,,which should i go with? i want to invest $5k. $2.5k in each?

Pimco gave me about a 4% return over the last 9 months

If you are young you want nothing to do with bonds....

Choose 3-5 funds and allocate accordingly
Make sure you put enough into avoid fees. Look for no-load funds.

$DNDN - First FDA approved immontherapy (no/pre chemo) drug for cancer. Look at the chart and you tell me why it's a buy. I'm sitting on heavy position.

$MAKO - Mini- ISRG is what it's often called. Surgical Robotics is the new thing for medical procedures all around the world. Like $DNDN it has been beaten DOWN by the street. Currently, their robot only does hip and knee surgery. They are R&Ding other attachments to the robot which can open up the robot to do different type of surgeries. I won't get into it too much. Decent position.

$RNN - Do some reading and you'll see why. Remember though, this is a penny stock biotech. ONLY consider this company if you are knowledgeable and are willing to do a lot of due diligence. Things can change VERY quickly with penny stocks BOTH WAYS/<><><><><><>

Penny stocks are volatile, and they are much more likely to bomb than a larger company. So unless you have some insight that nobody else here does, I would say that you should generally avoid them.

Don't listen to anyone's advice about stock picks. Trying to choose individual stocks that will do well is like trying to guess lottery numbers. Unless you know something that nobody else does, you're very likely to lose money. You won't always lose money, but most people that do it this way lose money.

In my opinion, the best course of action for an 'average' (aka non-genius level investor) is to look at general trends of which types of investments do well over a long period of time, and how you can, on average, actually make money. From what I've seen, index funds are your best bet. A passively managed fund will do better, on average, than an actively managed fund, and you don't need to be paying for your money to get moved around as much.

Index funds attempt to track the market, so when the market goes up, your index fund goes up. When the market goes down, well, yeah. But the market generally trends upward in the long run, so if you can leave your money in for at least a few years, you have a very good chance of making money.

I would say go with Vanguard for very low fees, or Fidelity for low fees as well. Index funds give you a broad range of stocks, both in terms of sector (health, tech, etc) and company size (small/medium/large). This means that if one sector bombs, you don't lose all your money, but if things are going well, you still make a decent amount. You also do pretty well with dividends (expect around 2% or so).

Or you can listen to Barnz, but as much as he (and most other people that talk about investing) likes to tell you what he knows about investments, overall he's lost money on his investments.

In my few years of investing, my index funds have increased in value significantly and the dividends have increased the number of shares I hold. Now, in a crash, many people will sell off their stock, and lose money. If you have the guts to leave your money in the market, you'll make your money back and more when it goes back up again.

Trying to hold the 200 MA. Got a little squeeze above the 50 MA. Marching up on the daily out of a huge hole with a 31% short float. I'd watch earnings for a squeeze. Could easily get cut in half at the drop of a hat.

You bet I have. It all started in college when I thought I was a hot shot and could "pick stocks." Know you know why investing is an asinine idea.

And if you've actually paid attention, I strive to know nothing about any of these stupid companies and I don't give a rip what the news says about them either.

I gave him some insight. I told him that I wouldn't go for penny stocks, and I gave him clear reasons for my answers. Meanwhile, you're using jargon that he probably won't understand , and telling him 1 particular stock without a reason why. Maybe you need to read the first post as well?

Also, what math are you talking about on returns? You said last year you lost a dollar and made 3.75.. congrats? Rather than act like you know everything about the market, you could try actually trying to help other people understand things a little better..

Risk:reward ratio. Rather than act like you can invest, you could actually post some growth stocks and we'll see how you do over the course of the year. Anyone can park in an index.

And leave your money in the market during a crash? You mean like when the Dow hit 14k in 2007 and wait 5 years and still be down 2% nominal (excluding inflation) today?

Look, it's really simple. Come up with a plan. Entry and exit. Practice first. When you're ready to execute, then execute and don't deviate from that plan. For a noob, stops are a must.

This, of course, must take into account your goals (sort, mid, long term) as well as the puke factor (risk). Chances are, you won't do any of the above and lose 50% of your "investments" in the first couple of years.

The stock market "functions" to rip you off 100% of the time with for rhyme or reason. Get used to it. If I knew everything about the market I wouldn't spend anytime trying to help newcomers understand how it really works. You can be very successful, but you have understand it's all a game.
