Here is where you are incorrect. The cables I were using supported DC -- or so they said. And they also worked fine with my Sony receiver...but my HK didn't jive with the cheap ones.

And this is where I will disagree with you to an extent. I will never suggest people pay $30 for a simple 6' cable (like Best Buy would try to charge you). Nor $15. Or even $10. And sure, the $1 cable might deliver a picture for the time being, but I've run into numerous situations where a cheap $1 monoprice cable starts to develop handshake issues (even with the most basic of programming). As a result, I sent the receiver in for warranty repair. There was nothing wrong with the receiver. In the case of the PS3/HK, I returned the AVR1700 thinking it was the HK's fault. My PS3 "programming" worked fine 100% of the time with my Sony...but the HK didn't like the cheap ass cable. Again, could I turn DC off? Sure. But I paid for the feature in my PS3 and my Sony TV. Why should I not be able to use it if the receiver supports it simply because I'm too cheap to pay a few extra bucks for a cable that will work? I've also run into two different instances where I've had to re-fish an HDMI cable through the wall -- ones that ORIGINALLY worked, lasted a few months or a year or two...and then start to flake out with flickering issues, sparkle issues, etc. One of the cables was so cheap, it even snapped when I was trying to pull the new one through -- which resulted in me having to do an entirely new fishing job.

My point? Sure, you can buy a $1 cable. Will it deliver a picture for awhile? In most cases, yes. But I've learned through the years that paying a few extra bucks up front and getting a better quality one will save you time, money and headaches down the road from having to replace them/re-fish them/troubleshoot issues/take back receivers for the wrong reasons, etc.

I'm in no way associated with them, but the Blue Rigger cables on Amazon have nearly 100% 5-star feedback and have hundreds/thousands of people who have reviewed them. They cleaned up my HK issues (and also an SD programming issue) immediately -- as such, to me that says the cables were the issue. To boot, you can usually get a two pack of 6-footers for about $9 [amazon.com] with free S&H (if you have Prime).

I'm just sharing my experiences. Again, I wouldn't suggest people run out and pay $60 for Monster Cable HDMI cables -- or even "Rocketfish" Best Buy cables -- thinking they will get an uber 1337 picture. But it seems to me that the $1 monoprice cables eventually come back to bite you in the ass in terms of time/problems/etc. down the road.

I don't want to threadcrap because this would be a legitimately good deal... if it wasn't sold by 1saleaday. I will forever shout to the heavens (and slickdeals) how awful this company is and how ANY deal from them isn't worth the great chance that they will dick you somehow.

Out of three orders I placed with them, only one ever arrived as it was supposed to -- and it was a simple iPod cable. One of the orders never arrived and it took months to get a refund, and the other order was literally sent to a different address than I put in (over 2000 miles away), and they refused to give the $25 refund stating that I could probably mail the person at that address and have them ship it to me. REALLY?! It took two months of going through a PayPal dispute to get it back.

Just because your cable said it supported deep color and really didn't doesn't make me incorrect.

Like I said before, higher color depths (deep color) is an optional specification. Retailers will say the cable is version 1.X and list all of the capabilities of that version of the cable (like deep color) but they may not actually implement all of those features since most of them are optional. The HDMI Licensing group is now requiring that referencing to version numbers needs to be removed from packaging and advertising for the cable and it needs to actually specify which features the cable actually supports.

I've had plenty of success with cheap HDMI cables. It's all I've had since I moved to HD in 2007. Zero issues. I would have to agree with you if I was actually running these through my walls I would spend a little more money for that extra piece of mind.

Regardless of what it said it supported/didn't support and/or implemented/didn't implement...it boils down to this. My Sony receiver played just fine with a cheap cable/DC combo, but it flickered with the HK. One might blame the receiver for that -- and for argument's sake, we will. But if you find a receiver that you like and costs hundreds of dollars, you can bet the barn that the cable gets the axe, not the receiver, if a replacement cleans it up. Beyond Deep Color, my SD cable TV programming also looked like ass -- sparkles all throughout the video. Replacing it with a better cable cleaned it up.
