RX100 Owners - Need help with which accessories to get

Let me start off by saying that I am kind of a photography noob and a lot of the RX100 features are probably way over my head. The reason I'm getting such a high end P&S camera is I had a lot of Sony Rewards points to burn.

I'm starting to get in to photography and have read/am reading some books now to learn more (Understanding Exposure [amazon.com], D5100: From Snapshots to Great Shots [amazon.com], and digital slr photography for dummies [can't find it on Amazon])

I bought these books to help me learn how to use my D5100 I recently got. Hopefully some of that knowledge will help me with the RX100 as well.

Back to the title subject in the Title. I have an RX100 on the truck for delivery today. I'm looking for help on what accessories I should be buying for the RX100.

I know I definitely will need a case of some sort If anyone can point me to which case/s I should be getting. I'm sure there are plenty of other accessories I should be getting as well which is why I'm asking for help in this thread Smilie

Which accessories are essential or should I be getting? (I have plenty of SD cards)

Go to Amazon (or Google for that matter) and search "rx100 accessories"... it's not very helpful.

Yes, I can just buy any RX100 case or accessory... but I posted this because SD is a community whose opinion I trust and would like peoples first hand experience on which accessories I should get. I don't want to buy garbage,

My last camera I ended up wasting money on accessories I rarely used.

I positively hate in-camera charging, and all Sony camera batteries are now charged in-camera, external charger is no longer included. I bought the Sony BC-TRN2 external charger. Works great for me because I also have a Sony TX20 which they can share the charger.

Cases are totally personal, but I always prefer one that fits snug to minimize the bulk. I use a CasLogic case I bought from Walmart for $8.

That rocket looking thing is the dust blower I just bought. Works really well.

Finally screen protector. I bought the original Sony semi-hard protector. I don't normally use any screen protector, and I haven't even put it on my RX100 yet.

As far as reading, understanding exposure applies to all cameras. If you already understand how f stop, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivities affect the exposure from reading your D5100 book, it will apply to the RX100.

It's an awesome camera with amazing capabilities for its size. You'll love it!

I'd also suggest the fastest SDHC memory card you can. I was using a pqi 150x 32GB SDHC card, but it was too slow when doing burst shooting. Next I used a scandisk extreme 30MB/s card. That worked better but when I get this camera again I'll go with the scandisk extreme at least the 45MB/s but probably the 95MB/s. The files that are created are pretty large. The full image jpgs are ~5MB to 7 MB and the raw files are 20+.

The Franiec grip [kleptography.com]. Here's a better picture [dpreview.com]. (it uses an adhesive which I'm not excited about) & this one [amazon.com] I saw on Amazon. It attaches via the tripod mount.

The Franiec grip seems less bulky but requires an Adhesive and the one from Amazon adds a little extra bulk and has to be detached to access the battery or SD card slot.

Installing one of those add-on grip is a compromise - it's either adhesive which may or may not leave residue if you decide to remove it, and probably can't be reused, or it's screwed on which means you gotta remove it to reach the battery and SD card which is a no no for me.

This is another option that I actually thought about putting on my camera. Probably not as grippy as a full add-on grip, but the skin adds no bulkiness. I think it adds a stylish flair to the camera. I learned about this skin on dpreview, and members said the adhesive comes off clean and leave no residue. I decided against putting anything on it as the camera goes in and out of my jeans pocket, so I'm afraid the corners will peel off.

I have it (the 52mm version since I already have 52mm filters), and it seems to work okay for me. But I would not buy their cir-polarizer filter.. just get a better brand of cir-polarizer filter and the bare 52mm threaded magfilter and screw the two together.

This is an old thread, so I won't dig around for actual links--no idea whether OP is still interested.

In any case, I would recommend the following:
1. Gariz leather skin ($15), fraenic grip ($35), generic grip ($10 from adorama), gariz half-case ($65)
2. standalone battery charger (no usb, $3-$5)
3. Maximal battery ($5-$6)
4. buy 10" screenprotector from xtremeguard on sale, cut to size for LCD
5. Lensmate filter adapter ($35)
6. Cokin A/P filter holder and series of filters--or just stick with 49mm/52mm screw-filters
7. good loop-based camera strap (like Luma LoopIt)

I could probably think of a few more things, if I was prodded. I have all of the above, except for the lensmate adapter (next on my list).

That said, I have used skins, the Franiec AND Flipbac grips, and half-cases (not Gariz) with various P&S and mirrorless bodies, so I'm experienced with all of them.

Pretty, and functional--it's not nearly as slippery with leather attached.

It won't look nearly as good as the franiec grip, but it will fit and get the job done. I use this exact grip with an S100 (as pictured)--feels good--like rubber--as opposed to the metallic feel of the Franiec grips. It's as thick as the control ring on the s100, so that means it won't add thickness to the RX100.

I don't know what you've got already, but at the very least, I would recommend a screen protector, extra battery, and the supplemental AC charger. Plugging the camera in to charge each time is a giant pain in the butt--and it's impossible to use your camera while batteries are being charged. I would highly recommend the lensmate set if you're creative and plan on investing in a filter setup. A Lee setup would be too big for this, but you could use Cokin P--though Cokin A would be the perfect size.
