Inspired by this thread and specifically this post, I did some digging to look for the 50 GB offer from Box.com for Dell advantage customers.

It turns out that the link does NOT seem to be specific to a user, so ANYONE can use it. Besides, they seem to WANT to share with your co-workers and friends. Consider yourselves my friends hug

50 GB link [box.com]

Thread FAQ
Details
50 GB of web storage
250 MB file size limit
10 GB - monthly shared bandwidth limit (calendar) [box.com]
Simple sharing and collaboration
Mobile app access

- I already signed up on the 25GB promo, can I sign up again?
For those who signed up previously with a gmail account, you can use the multiple gmail aliases trick [makeuseof.com], to sign up again for the 50 GB.

So instead of signing up for youremail@gmail.com, sign up with youremail+anystuffyouwant@gmail.com, and it should sign you up to a new account. Posters have reported this works and some use youremail+box@gmail.com for ease of remembering.

- It seems to require a phone number. Do I have to give my real phone number?
Yes, a phone number is required, and no, it does not have to be a real one.

- Can I merge multiple accounts together?
No, this is not possible. From Box.com's FAQ [box.com]:

Quote :
We currently do not provide account merge functionality, and email address cannot be associated with more than one Box account
Posters HAVE reported being able to share folders from one account to the other, though. This might run into sharing bandwidth issue, though.

If you don't delete your old account, can you still change your temporary email address to your real email address, thus giving you 75GB? Or is this blocked?
No. It won't let you add an email already linked to an account to another account. I'm glad actually because I tried that (wouldn't let me) and thought that that would lead to log in problems and confusion.

Understood. Thats kind of what I was thinking.

Also, I just "upgraded" to 50gb using the "account hop". I made a new account, deleted the old one, added my original email to the new one, made it primary, and deleted the new email that registered the new account. I now have 50gb instead of 25gb in the account I made the other day using my original email. No having to remember +anything when logging in. I posted this in the wiki for people not as clever as me. Are you sure? My biggest fear was losing the original account permanently. I actually did this a little differently than I mentioned. I didn't exactly cancel my old account first. What I did was...

I added a disposable email address to my old (25) account.
I made that NEW (disposable) email address the primary account.
I deleted my original (good) email from the account.

I made a NEW (50) account using a 3rd email (disposable)
I added my original (good) email to the new account.
I made the original (good) email the primary.
I deleted the 3rd (disposable) email.

The 50gb is now my new account that I am able to log-in to using my original email.
I canceled my old 25gb account which is now linked to some garbage email.

Thats the way I did it. I ASSUMED just canceling the old account and starting over would do the same thing. If my instructions caused you to lose your old account permanently, I am very sorry. I recommend emailing and/or calling box.com and telling them you accidentaly canceled your account because you were unfamiliar with the interface and are now upset and are turned off from box.com unless you can get it restored.

In the meantime, go and reserve a new 50gb account with ANY email so you can try this again later!

License to Box. Customer grants to Box and its contractors an irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide license to access, use, modify, and delete any information, materials, data, files, programs, ideas and opinions provided or made available by Customer ("Customer Content") through the use of Software for the sole purpose of synchronizing the services made available through the Software with the services made available through the Website.

Make sure you encrypt your data.
The key phrase here is "for the sole purpose of synchronizing," meaning they cannot access or use your data for any other purpose. In theory, of course... lol

Sync limit:
Technical Limit: 40,000 files & folders maximum

50GB is useless if you cannot store more than 40000 files.

https://support.box.com/entries/2...d-to-40000
Why do you say that? That's 50,000 MB for 40,000 files, giving you an average of 1.25 MB per file. With people on here complaining about the 250MB per file limit (which BTW would fill up your account with only 200 files), I doubt many people will have much trouble with the 40,000 file limit, unless they literally only upload tons and tons of tiny files, with never a single large one... I signed up with an outlook.com email account and under profile and collaborators it showed every other person who signed up with an outlook account, 700 pages of full email addresses. I immediately cancelled. Is this a normal feature of this service??

For the heck of it I signed up using the link in the first post of this thread and used a spare Gmail account and got 50GB.

It could be sync to someone else somewhere else and you should always encrypt YOUR data.

I love all the posts about how "worthless" this is because of the "size limit on files" or the "number of file" or********. Holy crap people, if you don't like it drop them an email. I am sure they will refund your money!
The amount of people that bitch over things that are free just crack me up!

TAGcaver, For casual users it's reasonable limit. I am web developer. I use cloud storage for my projects, notes, tutorials etc. So that I can work on multiple computers without moving files manually. These are small size files in large numbers. If you check the links I posted - most of the developer/enterprise users have raised this issue to Box.

I'm guessing 99% of all box users probably only use a couple hundred megs of space(if that) so this is a good advertising ploy to get more users. When in all actuality they will never fill up that much space. And even if they did you do realize by agreeing to their terms you give BOX rights to "your" data...

If anyone is really serious about "cloud storage" they're just going to pay for web hosting.

Also here's my issue with cloud storage. How much advance warning does a cloud storage company need to give when they shut down? Any? What's in the terms of service? This day and age it's pretty competitive with the dot com companies fighting for business. They push their margins so much that sometimes they just shut down because there is no more money... What happens then? How do you get your data? You don't. It's not regulated by any govt agency. Yeah it's a convenient service I will grant that. But I still like a good old 32 gig USB stick or a raided backup server to hold my important information.

Hmmm. I have Outlook account and under collaborators its empty. I think it depends on your Outlook setting.

Is yours an @outlook.com email? I changed all the settings on box.com to be private and it still showed up, some with full names. I think it is happening because unlike gmail, they didn't know outlook is a free email service and think we are all part of a company who may want to share. I will email them and ask what is up.
