I can't find the lifehacker one because I'm a little lazy but it talked about how employees just give out new ones, the original ipad has been oos and out of production for years. Refurbs are just non existant nowadays, thats why ipad 1s go for alot online because people exchange them for new ones.

Most Tegra 2 Android devices are better than the original ipad. Galaxy Tab, Transformer, S-Tablet, Xoom, etc. Even with simple browsing, you can tell the difference between a Tegra 2 and iPad 1, not even talking about the games.

So I received an ipad with red lines running through the lcd and purchased an incident phone report with Applecare for $19. They then set up an appointment for me to see a genius and the genius told me that the only recourse that I had was either to have my ipad 1 replaced for $250 as they can't repair it onsite or to buy a completely new ipad. So much for the $100 upgrade option...
