Is there a current slickdeal on the machines? I bought six bottles in anticipation of getting the machine.

Nothing amazing. If you're in a time-crunch, keep an eye out for a 30% off kohl's coupon, or one of those 15%-20% BB&B coupons. A few weeks ago, you could have gotten a genesis for $50 at BB, but that was a one day promotion.

maybe the new one is a bit easier and quicker by the looks, not that the original was time consuming or anything but I'll tell you, i never use it anymore, it's so much quicker and easier and most importantly, less messy to just grab a can from the fridge.

Soda stream is a exercise in futility because if you aren't lighting fast between pouring in the syrup and feverously screwing on the cap you end up with a wonderful sticky mess spraying all over the kitchen. It's simply a bad design that is completly dependnt on how fast you can screw on the cap after dumping in the syrup because if you mess up once it's a friggen disaster....and yes, the grape and orange stain like a mofo, dont even think for a second you could let the kids use this.

Next time don't try putting on the cap. All you have to do is put your palm over the top to seal the container for a few seconds and then release and everything is golden.

A couple of weeks ago, a bunch of us found them clearanced for $29.99 at Target. With the mail in rebate they had (expired on 1/31), cost was $9.99. I doubt Target has any left, but might be worth a look. Here's the link to the thread with an inventory checker...

I'm not experiencing any of the issues you're having. You're following the directions, and pouring in at an angle? Are you carbonating to 3 buzzes, or beyond?

My only issue pops up when I first unseal after mixing/shaking the syrup in the bottle--but I quickly learned that I can control the release of the cap to avoid any bubble-over.

The problems that some of you seem to face completely baffle me--the sodastream process has been a relatively painless one for me.

It doesn't really matter how much of an "angle" you hold it on.....pouring sugar into carbonated water acts as a condensation nuclei, it's going to release the carbon dioxide, it's only a matter of time, less syrup and you might have a better chance but it's still going to happen.

I'm in the boat that i find the recommended amounts to be pretty bland and flavorless, I find i need to put about 1 1/2 times the recommended amount (depending on the flavor) and that in turn causes an even greater release of carbon dioxide when introducing the syrupy, it's a vicious circle.

Try just pouring half the syrup in and wait ten seconds then the other half to prevent foam overs.

This is what I do. Never had any issues. The syrup bottle cap makes for a slightly awkward pour, so sometimes I get a few drops on the outside of the bottle too, but nothing serious. I could see why you wouldn't want a young kid doing it, but this part of the process is trivial.

I'm guessing most of the users complaining about this actually take issue with the overall convenience and/or cost (which are two very real, valid concerns for some users), and it is just manifesting itself in these more petty complaints.

You are doing something wrong. Make sure to fill the bottle only to fill line, pour syrup in slowly and at an angle, letting it run down the inside of the mouth. I like a lot of carbonation, and the only time I had the problem you desribe was the first time I used it--user error, dumping it all straight in at once.

I don't shake the soda after I pour the mix in. I hold the soda in two hands and roll the bottle sideways a few times to get the mix shaken around.. never had any problems opening it doing it this way.

You are definitely doing it wrong. I have never had any of the issues you are experiencing. It's not a bad design at all if you follow the instructions correctly. I suggest you don't "dump" the syrup in. Just tilt the bottle sideways and pour the syrup in on it's side so it rolls down the top of the bottle and into the water.. It's really not that complicated.

My 7 year old makes his own soda all the time without a problem.
