Thread Details

Hello everyone,

Recently, some people over at Howardforums on grandfathered/classic plans have discovered that their $20/month 5GB Preferred Android Web data plan was replaced with a $5/month 5GB "Pref Android Web Reduced" data plan. Details are as follows:

-$5/month for 5GB. Throttles after 5GB although some users have reported no throttling at all.

-Only works for Grandfathered and Classic plans, NOT Value plans.

-Get by calling 611 on your T-mobile phone and saying "cancel" at the prompt to reach the retentions/loyalty department.

-Loyalty CSR called it "Bridge to Value Preferred Web" and described it as a way of giving classic plan members a sample of Value cost savings.

-Despite the name, it does not require you to switch to Value at anytime, nor was I forced to extend my contract.

-This reduced data plan is not eligible as a choice for getting an upgraded smartphones. Upgrading a line with the $5 plan will change the line back to the $20 plan. It's not clear whether you add the $5 data plan on a line that has upgraded recently.

-This is not like T-zones/Web2Go in that it WILL work with any Android phone. I don't know about other types of phones.

THIS IS NOT A GOOD DEAL FOR MOST PEOPLE

I was also offered this plan when my contract end date was approaching.

It honestly just doesn't make sense to me. I was currently paying $10/month for Internet on a classic plan. Upgrading to galaxy s3 or newer smartphone would cost me $20/month, and when I balked at that, that is when they offered me the bridge to value. HOWEVER,the plan itself makes no sense. It does not allow you to upgrade phones. Once you upgrade your phone you're still required to pay $20/month. Migrating to a value plan not only lowered my monthly voice plan but also my texting plan. On a bridge to value they are keeping you from upgrading phones AND preventing you from realizing true value plan savings.

For comparison I was paying $120/month after taxes for 4-line family plan 1000 minutes, text, and Internet on two lines. On a value plan I'm now paying $85 for 1000 minutes, text, and Internet in 4 lines. A bridge to value plan would have cost me $110/month for only two lines of Internet, with the same disadvantage as a value plan in that you can't upgrade phones.
how do you get $85/mon pricing? as 1000 min ($50) , text ($10), add-line * 2 (2*5 = $10), web * 4 (4 * 5 = $20) which is for 200mb data of course. so this come out to be $90 before tax.
unless u have loyal $10 discount n your add-line are free till Jan-2014, in that case. $70 before tax then.

The point is I don't want to leave my Grandfathered plan. I just want to pay a lot less for internet (currently not in any internet plan).
Okay I don't know your plan situation, but hopefully your grandfathered plan is cheaper than the value plan.

Sorry - to be clear, I was originally misquoted $85/month when I signed my contract. Woke up the next day logged onto T-mobile and saw I was being charged the $95/month, and called back and complained and they gave me the $10/month off for next 24 months.

Hmm, I have the old $5.99 T-Zones which only works on some smartphones, so I've been limited when choosing phones without jumping up to a pricier data plan. I wonder if it's worth the risk of giving up my grandfathered unlimited $5.99 plan. I don't plan on getting subsidized phone upgrades, so (hopefully) that would keep me from losing the $5 plan if I did get it. As long as it works with any phone OS, it might be worth it to open up my phone options, as I've never even come close to using 5GB of data.

Off to read the HowardForum threads, thanks for the heads up, OP.
tzone works on any phone if you know how

I called T-Mobile and was told that I am not eligible for this Bridge to Value plan since my contract only ends in June 2013. The CSR was trying to extend my contract by offering $10/month discount for 12 months and 1 month free (to stay in classic) or $10/month discount for 12 months (to switch to value plan). Both will extend my contract for 2 more years.
Called T-Mobile again and was able to add Bridge to Value plan. Extended the contract for 2 more years (was told that my earlier Classic plan was not eligible for Bridge to Value plan). Was told that I will be eligible to upgrade phones and will be able to keep this Bridge to Value plan.

I love the few of you complaining about T-Mobile being the 1st to get rid of Phone Subsidies. How many of you realize that the US is the ONLY country left that does subsidies, as well as we are near the bottom of the list when it comes to cell phone speeds in the world. We are so far behind most overseas countries, it's pathetic. I honestly wish phone subsidies would disappear completely and phones were automatically unlocked. This would make companies LOWER THE PLANS, ACTUALLY FIGHT FOR YOUR DOLLARS, AND HAVE BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE. Anybody that doesn't see this is just blinded by the "free phone" offers not realizing it costs you more in the long run on a 2 year contract.

"will change the line back to the $20 plan"?

$30 plan, you mean?

For 3 years, I've had:
NW BASIC PLUS 400 minutes $29.99
MSG VALUE BUNDLE 400 $4.99
REQ ANDROID WEB 5GB $30.00

You should switch to a value plan you are overpaying by $10 for less service, for $54.99 you could have 500 mins + UNLTD Text + UNLTD Data (True Unlimited)

just talked to tmobile. I'm currently on the classic 1000 minute plan ($60/month) with unlimited texting on all lines for $20/month. with 4 lines (2 additional lines are $10/month each). 2 lines have 200MB of data @ $10/month. There is also a random $5 off a month. So before tax my monthly total is $120.

I called to add 5GB for $5 a month on a line that has never had data before and the CSR said he couldn't add it. Instead he offered me $100 for 2 lines with 2GB unlimited data, 2 additional lines for $5 each. Data on 3rd line would be $10 for 2GB unlimited, then he offered $10 off for 24 months. Thats $110 total.

Is it worth trying to stay off contract and get 5GB of data added onto the 3rd line of my current plan?

i am in the same boat except 3 of my 4 lines have 200mb data @ 10 dollars per month, and the fourth line has 5 gb preferred for 20 per month - i was hoping to change all four data packages to the 5 per month package - did the CSR say that they could change the data on the lines with existing data?

I'm not sure, you should call it and ask. Let us know.

Does not work on grandfathered plans. Had to call three times, but no luck. Also was told that i could switch over to classic plan and get it, but there is a 200 dollar charge to do that. I am under a contract.
I'm on the Grandfathered Family 600 Minutes plan and it worked for me. There shouldn't be a charge to switch to a classic plan, did you mean a Value plan?

I'm not sure how you're doing the math, but with the $5 data plan, I'm paying the same as if I were on the Value plan. The nice thing about this is that it gives people the option to upgrade (and give up the $5) if they want to.

I was following the same howardforums.com thread yesterday but was curious if tivoman's plan was really the same as yours and another guy who did not get throttled. This is solely based on the name of your data plan compared to tivoman. Also, if it does not force you to switch, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of BTV? I hope they are not deceiving us.
Yes, I believe I have the same plan as tivoman. The name BTV also confuses me, but I specifically asked if I would be required to switch to value, and the CSR said no.

So if I buy an S3 through a person (Craigslist) for T-Mobile I can avoid paying $20/month through their upgrade and only pay $5/month through this offer?

I understand that I would be paying more for the phone than free through T-Mobile, but I'm wondering if that would work.
Yes, that should work.

Will this work for me?

I upgraded to an s3 and contract plan 2 months ago and had to get unlimited everything to be eligible for a free s3 after rebates. After I received my s3, I was able to downgrade all my lines to limited features such as $20 5gb data instead of $30 unlimited.

Now, Will this work for reducing the /$20 5gb to $5?

Thank you
No, I don't think you'll be able to get it since you just upgraded.

I was wondering if someone could help me, so we have a grandfathered plan and we've been contract free for about 2 years and my dad doesn't want to get locked into a 2 yr contract. Is it possible to get this added to the lines on our plan without signing a 2 yr contract? My parents have the 200mb plan and my brother and I have the grandfathered tzones plans. Any help is appreciated
I don't think you'll need to sign a 2 year contract.

It sounds like he was pitching you the Value plan. I would call Loyalty again and find someone that can add the $5 plan.

I would guess they can as long as it been a certain number of months past your upgrade data.

I recently upgraded 2 out of 4 phones on a grandfathered classic family plan. My line did not get upgraded yet as I am hoping for a deal on the Note 2. Later, while looking online, I saw something about my data being $5. Another call to TMo to find out my data was changed to bridge to value..huh I say. No one told me and I had not asked. I do not want to switch to a value plan as our plan works for us the way it is. TMo assured me that the change was only because I had not upgraded my phone but once I do I will go back to $20 for the preferred data plan I had. I told them I better be able to upgrade my phone and I better not get shafted on my data plan. I was told that I should have no worries. Time will tell. Oh, I asked if the $5 data could be put on the 2 phones I had upgraded and was told no........it was only for those who had not upgraded.
