Two fit in it and close properly if you carefully arrange them and are good at closing stuffed flat-rate legal envelopes without tearing/mangling them. Whether they tear the envelope apart during shipment is another matter. But you don't want to improperly close it and get charged the weight of 2 of these. They're 1 lb 15.5oz each before adding the envelope or box, label, etc. So an improperly closed envelope of 2 would probably get charged the 4-5 pound rate with a lot of postage due. Better to use a Regional A box if in doubt. Depending on distance, Regional A shirt boxes may come into play for 3 or 4 of them versus using 2 envelopes anyway. |

But the story used to be that the medium flat-rate was always more expensive than the A-box regional rate, even coast to coast. And even the B-box regional is cheaper than medium flat rate to a fair number of zones, and is larger. Flat-rate envelopes and boxes are limited to 70 (yes, seven zero) pounds. The A box charges 2 pounds Priority, and is limited to 15 pounds. The B box charges 4 pounds Priority, and is limited to 20 pounds. The C box is nearly useless. It charges for 17 pounds and has a 25 pound weight limit. In order of increasing size: Small flat rate Flat rate envelope Padded flat rate envelope (very convenient/easy to stuff full and still close) Legal flat rate envelope (bigger but tougher to pack right; and weaker) Regional A Medium (regular) flat rate Regional B Large flat rate (including the shirt-box-shaped "game board" box, very useful) Regional C If you get extra discounts (eBay top rated, etc) beyond usual USPS online rates, the regional A/B boxes don't get that extra discount. So if shipping something under 2 pounds, put it in a non-regional, non-flat-rate box and pay Priority by weight. But for shipping heavier items to farther destinations, the A box is a godsend. It pays to check the USPS website every few months to see what new free boxes they offer. I recently bought a 12 pound sealed lead acid battery and it arrived OK to me in an A box that the guy paid 2 pounds worth of postage on. He got away with adding plastic strapping outside it, which probably isn't quite allowed on any of the "if it fits, it ships" flat-rate or regional boxes. |
