OfficeMax is on many referral sites, yielding different amount back, 5% via Discover for instance.

Other sites seem to be lower, but would permit use of other credit cards. The total return may be higher if your credit card is generous for office supply purchases. Office Max is in the Amex Open program, and yields 5% with an AMEX business card in the program. Thus with crumbs, the total cash back might be as high as 9.2%. This would more than cover the tax.

A risk in offers like this a failure to use the rewards when you get them, due to forgetting.

I, like others, had given my junk E-mail in signing up. It appears I could change to a regularly monitored one, and request no offers.

That way I would see when the rewards posts, and be more likely to remember to use them. Should this work?

If this offer is your only source of rewards, you will end up with about $30 in credits, which is less than $50 which is often their minimum for free shipping? I am not near a store, and have previously redeemed for paper goods (tissues, toilet paper) or other things I am likely to use.

If no great deals appear, how likely am I to find shipping a problem in redeeming.

If you're talking about qualifying for the free shipping, that's no problem. Buy any one of the mentioned deals and it will qualify for free shipping (free shipping with $14 purchase).

If you're talking about redeeming the accumulated MaxPerks credits at some later point in time, then the answer is problematic. (We don't know, what we don't know. The problem will define itself at that future point in time.)

The Swingline deals appear to be "fixed" value rewards. Generally with fixed value rewards, if the purchase price is higher than the offer's advertised price, the rewards paid out will adjust up for the higher purchase price. If the purchase price is lower than the offer's advertised price, the rewards paid out will NOT adjust down for the lower purchase price.

Nevertheless, I sent OfficeMax's Customer Service an email, requesting them to clarify the conflicting information.

Meanwhile, I'm waiting to see what rewards are (really) posted to my MaxPerks account.
