Even RX100 cannot compete with a cheap $100 E-PL1 when it comes to sensor size, low light performance, blurring the background to make the pictures look artsy because with PS, everything's simply in focus and sharp. An E-PL1 with a kit lens even creates sharper images for less money.

E-PL1 still sells for around $200, body only. The kit lens is another $100. In terms of overall thickness, the EPL1 kit is TWICE as thick as the RX100. The EPL kits DO NOT fit in your pant pockets. The only fair size comparison would be if you swapped in a 20mm 1.7, and that adds an additional $400.

The E-PL1 has pretty horrendous autofocus. The RX100 wins at higher ISOs. The RX100 has better video. Let's see how far you can crop in with the e-pl1 vs rx100. The list goes on and on.

The m4/3 sensors are larger than the 1" RX100 sensor, but then you have to consider that the m4/3 is dwarfed by the Nex sensors--which are true APS-C You may as well spend a little more and get a nex 5n. And if you're an m4/3 fanboy and you actually care about performance and size, then you'd be looking at an OM-D, and not an EPL-1 (entry-level garbage). And I mock the E-PL1 in the nicest possible way, having owned one myself a few years back.

You mock and laugh because you THINK you were right. RX100 is better at taking snapshots but you did ignore the artsy part. You think you were right. I think I was right. At the end of the day, no one's right or wrong. Vicious cycle.

Not sure what you're trying to say at this point. I was stating fact--there was no conjecture involved. If there's anything regarding my statements that you particularly disagree with, point it out, and the discussion can continue.

Max ISO 3200 vs 25600. 12mp native vs 20mp. 720p vs 1080p. Rx100 screen has like 5x better resolution. Rx100 has 3x faster burst shooting, better dynamic range, is half as heavy, and has more focus points. Dimensions can be found on the product pages, but I know the epl1+14-42mm kit is twice as thick. Numbers are numbers--nothing particularly wrong that I can see. And no great disrespect to the E-PL1, but it's outclassed--and a good deal of that is because it has old tech. And obviously the E-PL1 cannot compare against the RX100 beyond 3200 ISO, even if you attempt to push it in post--3 extra stops to work with is still useful in the right situation.

There's almost nothing about the E-PL1 that makes it superior, aside from the sensor and having the ability to swap in a variety of very good m4/3 lenses.

No, it definitely doesn't deliver 200% better photos, and if that's your yardstick for photography equipment, you're going to be disappointed by just about any high end equipment.

Once you get past a certain point (arguably the point of an entry-level DSLR), it's all about incremental improvements--and you pay a lot for those improvements.

You make a fair point, though, and those casually interested in photography looking for a quality point and shoot at a SD price should go for this over the RX-100.

Yep, that's my blog. A lot of people find it odd that a Disney blog has so many photography reviews, but there's actually a HUGE Disney photography community. It's one of the perfect places for photography, in my opinion. Controlled lighting, incredibly varied environments, etc. It's like shooting fish in a barrel!

i don't know about you guys but I can't put my RX100 in my jeans, it just seems like that's asking for dust in the lens.

I've also noticed it's very easy to drop, a few times if I didn't have the strap around my wrist I'd have dropped it. I think that's a plus of bigger cameras like the LX-7.

I still have the LX7 saved in my cart from yesterday. Is it worth it to continue with the checkout process with the assumption that the LX7 is currently out of stock, considering that it's "unsearchable" in the entire site.

Agree with you, I have Sony NEX5N with a pancake lense which is really not much bigger than the LX-7. As I said, LX-7 is a great camera just bulkier than Canon S100. I am waiting to buy the RX100 when I have a good reason to tell my wife I need it:-)
What is your experience with RX100? Probably it is the best PS camera with that size.

I like the RX100, especially the speed, and the video which is stunning. Photos though seem closer to typical P&S than my Nikon D7000. I'm not sure it's worth $650, I was lucky to get the Dell AMEX deal. I probably wouldn't pay much over $450 for it. Like someone said, you're paying a big premium for that last bit of P&S superiority.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have a limited budget, and have a love-hate relationship with the 35mm f/1.8 I got for my Nikon D60. I love the lens, but I hate that it's made me unhappy with the quality of the 18-105 kit lens that has been shelved for 18 months, and that it's given me a new lust for the 85 f/1.8, which I'll probably snag this Summer/Fall.

I have a long-term lust for a more advanced body that gives me better ISO performance and HDR functionality, but I'm not sure I'll ever get to that point, since I don't take enough photos to warrant the $1000+ investment. Like you said, the advantages at that point are fairly incremental, but very costly; though, if you are a professional or a really avid photo enthusiast with some expendable cash, I can absolutely understand why you'd buy the nicer bodies. For now, the money is better spent improving my lenses (oh sigma, why won't you re-release the smaller form 50-150 f/2.8???).

Who knows, in 5 years, I suspect I'll trade in all my Nikon gear and switch over to a manufacturer that offers a superior HDSLR solution, but right now the tech seems to be new and in its infancy. So the cost/quality doesn't work for me just yet.

Ok so this is my first camera purchase in history. Im a newbie. How is this compared to the big SLR cameras? I want to use this camera for my indian colorful wedding day and my honey moon (Europe) trip. I'm hoping I will be fully satisfied and capture great colorful shots. I cant find this on amazon so cannot see the reviews on amazon but have seen other website. Is this the same as LX7K? Sorry for the rookie questions but just jumped on the deal sicne I saw great reviews on this thread.

I believe the LX7K is the black version, and Amazon should have reviews. Here [dpreview.com] is a professional review. Just keep in mind that the overall score seems lower than you might expect because its imuage quality is judged on the same scale as $2,000+ professional equipment.
