Does anyone know how this compares print-quality wise to my Canon MP970? I'm pretty sure the Canon is better on ink as it was one of the last to use the larger cartridges, but I don't know about the output quality. Thanks!

i got this printer last year from Staples for 1 cent when staples had some kind of "bring in your old printer deal" along with some other discounts they had.
love the printer, hate the refill costs for epson ink, but noticed that Costco is now doing epson ink refills, nice.

Well just wanted to correct my own post, it was a Epson Artisan 835 (9/29/2011), not a 837 that i got, staples paid me .01 for the printer. lol

This printer makes prints that are equal to or better than the photos you get from 1 hour photo place. The only problem is only Epson papers are properly calibrated for this printer, and you have to figure out the color profile if your third party paper does't tell you. Also, the 98/99 inks are dye-based ink so if you use a CISS system the ink they put in there aren't very durable if you want the prints to last a long time.

These dye based ink printers clean themselves automatically while unattended. This is necessary for dye based inks to prevent the heads from clogging. Unfortunately, in the Artisan line, this also over saturates the cleaning sponges prematurely. I don't know if it is still in the driver, but there used to be a way to disable the "automatic head maintenance" in the printer settings. If you use your printer at least once a week, then auto head cleaning is not necessary.

The prints from the Artisan line are rated as better than photo lab quality. The Artisan 7xx / 8XX printers can produce greater gradations of color than most of Epson's pro printers (although the pro printers can print on a much greater choice of media.) Using Epson inks, photo prints will not fade for nearly 100 years vs. seven to ten years for the Walgreens / Costco prints. I usually photo print anything I will frame and use Costco for prints I give away. Shockingly good photo results, but at a high cost per print. The down side is that this is an unapologetic photo printer that will give only marginally acceptable plain paper results. Everything on this printer takes a back seat to photo printing. Plain paper printing will not be water resistant and black text will be muddy grey. On the other hand, nothing less than $500 will compare to the photo print quality from the Artisan 8xx printers. As to the Epson branded photo paper, you should always stick with paper branded for your printer. Sometimes, Best Buy puts Epson paper products on sale for half price. Using other brand paper, such a Canon paper in an Epson printer, can damage your print head. Get 'em while you can as Epson my be discontinuing the Claria 98/99 based printers.

I print out approx 50-100+ 4x6 prints/month for my work. I currently wait until I get a decent batch and try to time if for when Walgreens/Walmart have a print deal going on. I get paid $1/photo and it usually costs me 15-20 cents to get them printed.
I just bought some of those 4x6 60-pack photo paper from Staples last week for $1/AR.
I was thinking of getting this to be able to do it all in-house and save myself some drive time. Besides I currently use two different older printers, one has a scanner but sucks, the other is an Epson and good for printing but it is getting old/worn. I have refillable ink carts which I love. I would have done the same for this printer.
