FYI for the $35 version: Product Grade 4 - Significant scratches or scuffs
Also if you don't really care about 3G you can buy a new, latest Kindle from amazon for $75. |

Gaia philosophy (named after Gaia, Greek goddess of the Earth) is the concept that living organisms on a planet will affect the nature of their environment in order to make the environment more suitable for life. + [gaiageek.com]

The keyboard is useless? I am always using it for the search function .. to search the book for terms or even looking up vocabulary. Audible.com also lets you download a free morning digest of the Wall Street Journal or New York Times, and you can listen to that while driving. I have a gen2 and my wife has a gen3 Kindle. I own the nice M-Edge leather case with their LED book light that fits into it. She has tried several various "book lights" with her Kindle as well. While the booklights work okay, they're still not ideal. You have to buy the booklight itself. You have buy/replace/recharge batteries. If the light is not built into the case, you have to keep track of the booklight in addition to the Kindle. External booklights add weight and thickness to the cases if they're built-in which, to some extent, negates the perk of the Kindle being lighter than paper books. Keeping a separate booklight attached to the Kindle without a case is a pain. The lighting from an external booklight is uneven and directional. Etc., etc. For the past several years that I have owned my 2nd gen Kindle, I've said repeatedly that it would be perfect if only they could light the screen without adding glare. When Amazon announced the Paperwhite, I pre-ordered it as soon as possible. It's worth every penny to me. The lighting is very adjustable and fairly uniform. There is no glare. It makes the pages readable without lighting up the room. The battery life on the Paperwhite is excellent even with the backlight on. It is wonderful for early morning or late night reading on airplanes. It is a godsend if you like to read in bed after your significant other has gone to sleep and complains about the nightstand lamp being on. It's great for camping, too. Also, before I used the Paperwhite, I didn't think I would care one way or the other about the touchscreen. After using it for a while, I definitely prefer it to hard buttons. I do have two very minor critiques of the Paperwhite. The first is that the bezel is almost too small. You have to be careful or you end up accidentally turning the page when you brush against the edge of the screen due to the small bezel. The second is that the touchscreen is almost too sensitive. I would have preferred that it require slightly firmer contact to register a "touch". These are minor complaints to me though. I think it is completely worth the extra $$ for the Paperwhite if you tend read at night or in poorly lit areas on a semi-frequent basis. Last edited by lthompson218; 02-11-2013 at 07:31 AM.. |

We went to Japan last summer thinking we could find free wi-fi easily. Boy, we were WRONG! Free wi-fi at Mcdonald's IF you have Softbank phone service. Same at Starbucks, too. We kept looking for unsecured line while walking around. I was super shocked since I am used to get totally free wi-fi in US.
