Ipod touch or tablet???please help!

Hi all-I am looking for "something" for my son. He uses my samsung galaxy 3constantly to play games-and prior to that my i-phone so with that being said...

1)he is 10
2) this would be for playing games from app store
3) he also needs video capability(take)
4)don't care about brand-whatever works and is reliable and CHEAP
5)he has a laptop-"not the same' he says---grrrrr
6)tight budget for his birthday-in 2 weeks-(been on medical leave for a bit)
So I am not sure if a smaller tablet or older ipod-ipad????
Please Help!! I just don't know too much about cowboom-although I am learning-and after reading all the posts following the i-pad 1st gen post the other day-I am totally confused and scared-hehe Thanks so much any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Also I guess I should mention that my husband and i both have Android devices and are Verizon customers

Wow....hmmm you said an older iPad don't know of any deals under $200 on those. Good luck with that. Parents always wanna buy kids crap, they are way more sophisticated in tech then we are. Keep in mind any android tablet not running 4.0 or higher is pretty useless in the Google Play store. Maybe a used or refurbished Kindle Fire HD or Nook. There is a Chinese Knock-off Anol Novo 7 Tornado 7 inch if you can find it $80 or less or Ainol Novo 7 Crystal newest model $119(Jelly Bean 4.1) My brother found the older Anol tornado for $35 at a computer swap meet in So. Cal I put a custom firmware on it for him without that everything was in Chinese language. Not to bad for $35 not sure how long it will last but I was impressed. Good luck
