I have this drive, and I had the exact same problem. You cannot fix it from Control Panel alone. You have to disable the Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) and Advanced Power Management (APM) on the drive. There are various programs that can do that.

This work well on Windows 7. But on Windows 8, at least for me, the settings don't persist through Sleep. When it wakes up for Sleep again, AAM/APM reset back to their annoying "clicking" state.

Yes this drive does respond to even remote calls, and I have it fit internally so no probs there.. its just that the sound actually scares me because it is starkingly similar to a failing HDD I hope it helps for a longer life.



well tried that, I dont like my computer to even sleep because it is ON all day and I need it any time from my work etc. I think this is more of something Seagate has done.. not sure

I literally hear the drive starts spinning and there is a good long 4-5 seconds gap each time this happens.
once it awakens, the drive performs really fast, though.
It might just be some setting that needs to be done, but I thought I should mention this. I also had to do some special Seagate driver stuff before Win7 could recognize all 3TBs

WD Red 3TB is $150... worth the extra $30 for HTPC/media server (likely on 24/7) use? Or should I save the $30 and go with the Seagate?

For 24/7 the Red may be worth it saving you in wattage and the longer wty offsets the price difference. Prob can't go wrong either way.

Patch the firmware. I got one of these on black friday and noticed the "chirp" sound out of the box. It's aggressive head parking, and it does shorten the life of the drive. The new firmware fixes it. Once I patched it the sound stops (without having to constantly disable APM).

mine says CC24. and there's nothing on the seagate website.. something about CC24 firmware being the latest for oem drives
