this drive often goes into "semi-sleep" state when not in use and when it is time to get something from it or write something to it, I literally hear the drive starts spinning and there is a good long 4-5 seconds gap each time this happens.
I don't mind that - especially if it helps drive life - being external though - possibly your enclosure electronics might be involved?

I've experienced similar "hangs" on sleeping WD drives waking up from desktop access, though on the LAN as media drives they would always still respond to calls to play movies/TV Shows etc. from an Apple TV, WD Live Streaming box, iPads, EyeTV and others.

because may be these are 7200rpm? and seagate?

this is a solid drive, but i sort of have a silly problem with it
I have one from an earlier SD that I use as the "data" drive in my recent build that has an Intel SSD for the OS. But this drive often goes into "semi-sleep" state when not in use and when it is time to get something from it or write something to it, I literally hear the drive starts spinning and there is a good long 4-5 seconds gap each time this happens.
once it awakens, the drive performs really fast, though.
It might just be some setting that needs to be done, but I thought I should mention this. I also had to do some special Seagate driver stuff before Win7 could recognize all 3TBs
It's a setting in all power plans in Windows. If you click to change plan settings for each power plan, under hard disk, you can set the amount of time to power down a drive. Type 'power options' to get to the menu to change power plans.

I got one of the 3TB amazon deals, just never saw the $90 deal in my deal alerts, any links so I can see where things went wrong?
Unfortunately I can't find the thread for some reason. The $90 deal was tacked onto the $100 deal thread if I recall.

Yes this drive does respond to even remote calls, and I have it fit internally so no probs there.. its just that the sound actually scares me because it is starkingly similar to a failing HDD Confused I hope it helps for a longer life.

well tried that, I dont like my computer to even sleep because it is ON all day and I need it any time from my work etc. I think this is more of something Seagate has done.. not sure

I'd be all over this if it was $90 since I'm building a new build. CA tax also is a factor in my purchases. If it was $100 I'd still consider it even with the CA tax. But all of you who don't factor in taxes from your state, is it still a slickdeal?

Economy is rough and wallet is smooth. I'd like my wallet to get rough.

I have this drive, and I had the exact same problem. You cannot fix it from Control Panel alone. You have to disable the Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) and Advanced Power Management (APM) on the drive. There are various programs that can do that.

CrystalDiskInfo: http://crystalmark.info/software/...dex-e.html
QuietHDD: https://sites.google.com/site/quiethdd/

This work well on Windows 7. But on Windows 8, at least for me, the settings don't persist through Sleep. When it wakes up for Sleep again, AAM/APM reset back to their annoying "clicking" state.

Man where are the $90 3TB drives that we had around black friday?! I really need more space.

I have 3 of these drives running in a NAS they are solid.
I have to say that i got 2 of these for my girlfriends system that i bough her. I used windows mirrored raid and i am VERY pleased with the performance! VERY FAST! Crazy fast. So fast that i am going to buy 2 for myself and replace the 6 1tb drives that i have in my current build. I am running raid 1+0, but it is very slow in my mind. I am tired of it loosing one drive. Mirrored only i feel is much safer.

False. I bought 3 of these for a raid 5 setup around black Friday for $90 each. Newegg started the deal and amazon price matched a couple hours later. I'm starting to wish that I had bought even more of them. I updated them to the latest firmware right after receiving them and they have been running flawlessly ever since.

Mine don't. There is no noise at all, temperature is like 35-37 on full load IO, at ambient 25 Celsius. I would say these are perfect drives. However, $119 is kinda painful price, unless you are desperately in need of them right now.

90 dollar deal was only during BF sale and was only from TDirect, as far as I remember. These are solid HDDs, just sucks to get one after others got it for 90 + FS. I think I will wait a bit more, at least until they drop down to 100
