WD Red 3TB is $150... worth the extra $30 for HTPC/media server (likely on 24/7) use? Or should I save the $30 and go with the Seagate?

Depending on which version of the drive you got believe they've issued a firmware update for that. May want to visit Seagate support site.

I have this drive, and I had the exact same problem. You cannot fix it from Control Panel alone. You have to disable the Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) and Advanced Power Management (APM) on the drive. There are various programs that can do that.

CrystalDiskInfo: http://crystalmark.info/software/...dex-e.html
QuietHDD: https://sites.google.com/site/quiethdd/

This work well on Windows 7. But on Windows 8, at least for me, the settings don't persist through Sleep. When it wakes up for Sleep again, AAM/APM reset back to their annoying "clicking" state.

Yes this drive does respond to even remote calls, and I have it fit internally so no probs there.. its just that the sound actually scares me because it is starkingly similar to a failing HDD Confused I hope it helps for a longer life.

well tried that, I dont like my computer to even sleep because it is ON all day and I need it any time from my work etc. I think this is more of something Seagate has done.. not sure

I literally hear the drive starts spinning and there is a good long 4-5 seconds gap each time this happens.
once it awakens, the drive performs really fast, though.
It might just be some setting that needs to be done, but I thought I should mention this. I also had to do some special Seagate driver stuff before Win7 could recognize all 3TBs

i have one one of these as storage drives

is it supposed to have like 3 screeching noises when it starts up?
Quote from faizoff View Post :
Anyone know if this drive makes the same chirpy noise as the 2 TB version?
Patch the firmware. I got one of these on black friday and noticed the "chirp" sound out of the box. It's aggressive head parking, and it does shorten the life of the drive. The new firmware fixes it. Once I patched it the sound stops (without having to constantly disable APM).

For 24/7 the Red may be worth it saving you in wattage and the longer wty offsets the price difference. Prob can't go wrong either way.

Yeah, I have definitely been focusing on wattage for the build - i3, SSD, etc.

Reliability and noise are my keys when it comes to the HDD. This thing will be sitting under our main TV and I'll probably leave it on 24/7 for torrenting and serving media to other HTPCs.

I should add that I've already updated to the latest firmware and the chirping originally was horrendous, then after the firmware update it became tolerable but it's still there and is annoying.

Anyone tried PM at Staples and use a Staples coupon for this?

Hard to buy at $120 because they were $89.99 from both Newegg and Amazon around Black Friday (the same exact drive as this one). And before that they would go on sale for about $110.

I would pay about $20 more for the WD Red 3TB, which was on sale recently for $140. Seems like a better design.

That said, I now have 7 of these Seagates running in two PC's, all bought from Newegg, and they've not had any issues.

They usually PM Amazon, not Newegg - and seems they only have the retail drive in stock

These drives were never 90 bucks. The dumb slow green drives were.
You sir are wrong -- http://slickdeals.net/f/5546480-3TB-Seagate-Barracuda-7200-RPM-64MB-SATA-3-5-Internal-Hard-Drive-90-Free-Shipping?v=1

Read this thead. It was the Seagate 3TB 7200RPM 64mb cache drive. I should know, I started the thread and bought three of the drives.

I ordered one. Didn't know about the $90 3tb deal last year (and didn't need it then regardless) so this seems like a good deal. Cheaper than at Amazon and probably ship a lot sooner than them too

Man where are the $90 3TB drives that we had around black friday?! I really need more space.

I have 3 of these drives running in a NAS they are solid.
no joke! I felt stupid for ordering 4or 5 from new egg and another 4 or 5 from amazon at the $90 price! Glad I did as I am needing the space now and would be pissed to have to spend $120 on the same drive that was $90 in december..

CC4H is the newest.

APM is Advanced Power Management. It's powers down the hard drive when it's not in use to save power, but it makes it less responsive as well.

I can't find a link to it, but the 3tb Seagate Expansion was $90 and the 3tb Backup Plus was $100 on Amazon right around black friday. Both of those drives are external versions of this drive.

Yes, I bought one of those and also got a $90 bare drive close to BF also
