interesting... it's basically a side cutting drill bit. Similar in concept to the function of a RotoZip, but without the dedicated tool. There is one review on the site, but he seemed to indicate that it worked ok on drywall if only a drill is handy.
Seems great for someone who does not want to invest in a RotoZip - but i think it is best for occasional use only. |

Haven't used this particular one, but I've used these kinds of bits before. They definitely have their uses and you'll be thankful you have it when you need it. Only problem is it's only on very rare occasions that you do need it. Don't expect to do much better than when you angle your drill as far as making enlarged holes round unless you're very good and have steady hands. IMO, for $3, grab one and keep it in the toolbox for that rare occasion you do need it.

I picked this up a while back with some free SYWR points. For me this bit has limited usability. It seems to be able to drill straight through material like wood and drywall ok, but has real trouble cutting sideways. Maybe my drills just do not have enough RPMs (about 1500), but I could never get it to slice through wood (.75" stock which is maybe too thick). I could get it to cut through .5" drywall but a RotoZip, Dremel, jig saw does a much better and faster job. It has it uses, but it is limited.

Not sure what applications it fits for. It cuts slowly, difficult to cut straight, grinds away too much material, generates lots of dusts.

just dont expect to cut with this like cutting with a router. I basically nibbles at the edges and slowly cuts/or expands a hole.

will it cut sheetrock/drywall? (like an outlet size hole)

The previous version of this was a lot better, a much harder bit with side cutting nibs on the entire middle section of the bit.
The new one, as pictured, is a cheap-o version with just a small section for side cutting. I haven't used the new one, but I can tell you with this type of bit, having a longer side cutting center section makes a difference, so you can move the drill bit in and out rather than just hold it in place, especially on thicker materials. Perhaps some of those who buy online and pickup in store will receive one of the older bits. If you want, you can always look at the stock in the tools section and if they have any old ones, exchange the new one you received for an older one. |
