Thread Details

First quarter 2013 we have the 5% bonus cash back off of gas purchases with our card.
https://creditcards.chase.com/fre...ivate.aspx

You can prolong the 5% by walking inside the gas station, and if they offer their brand gas gift cards, buy them. It has been confirmed by Chase that you will get the 5% extra when purchasing a gift card inside the store.

You also get extra savings when using your gift card at the pumps or inside as they count as non-credit card transactions so you'd get the cash price on the gas per gallon.

I usually buy a good size $ gas gift card when the quarter is about over so I can continue to reap the rewards after the expiration of the extra bonus.

Just a reminder of what has always worked for me.

What I did to confirm is after purchasing my gift card, I'd call Chase customer service and they can confirm your % cash back with that particular transaction. There's never been an issue when it wasn't 5%.

Also if you have a BI-LO near you and use BI-LO Perks, this helps to use along with your BI-LO gas perks at the pump.

Is there a way to see the Chase Freedom points from each purchase? I only see the total reward number on their website...
No, but there needs to be. I've requested it many times but for some reason they don't do it.

Can someone help me? I have had my card for over a year and I need help with the math on this program.

If you spend $1500, you get those points (1%) and 4% on top of that if it's the bonus one.

$1500 * 5% = 75

75 points doesn't equal $75. For you to get $75, you would need 7500 pts. Correct? So do I assume you will get 7500 pts????

Penfed has a credit card that gives 5% cashback all year long.

So does the Sallie Mae World Mastercard (up to $250 in purchases each month).

Yes, exactly...

1) We're not all single
2) We're not just talking about one quarter
3) Most of all some of us get a lot more benefit out of our UR points than good old cash Big Grin

I don't know why you can't supplement the Freedom with the PenFed Visa. I personally got the BofA card that gives you 3% back on gas and for opening up they gave you basically a $440 sign up bonus. What's the sign up bonus on the PenFed? Big Grin

Are you talking about the BOA CC (signature) with $400 + 10% which came out around August September?

Yeah, but Penfed will only let you join if you fit certain criteria. They're like AAFES. 5% is pretty amazing these days though.

I will confirm the OP's idea for gas station gift cards, I do this for BP and Speedway all the time. again, never had an issue.

in fact, back in the day (2007/2008), Marathon used to sell their prepaid cards for 4% off ($50 for for 48, etc), those also qualified for the discounted "cash" price at the pump, so in effect you could triple-dip - discounted "cash only" gas price + gift card discount + credit card cashback,,, Haven't been to a marathon is years so no idea if they still do anything like that.

Also, not sure if it matters for each club or not, but every Sam's Gas station I've been to (granted it's only 3 or 4) accepts BOTH Visa AND Mastercard.

and yes, it for sure is coded as gas, and i've never had an issue getting 5%.

I'll for sure be stocking up on BP+Speedway cards in the month of March, enough to max out the $1500 advantage.

my associated bank visa "only" gives back 3% for gas so i guess that'll have to do for the rest of the year once these prepaid cards run out.

in short: thanks for the reminder, OP!

Not sure, it is the Bank Americard Cash Rewards card. It was around last Aug/Sept

No. The GetGo that I shop at (in Columbus, Ohio) always coded their transactions as gas. I bought thousands of dollars worth of gc's there last year and got %5 cb. Turkey Hill stores also coded their sales as gas for Kroger and other gc so I buy Kroger gift cards and shop there. But I like Meijers a WHOLE lot better and it's a bummer their gas station purchases code as supermarket.Frown

Just to confirm: Do you buy Kroger gift card from Turkey Hill Store (and the purchase coded as gas) and then use those in Kroger to buy groceries? If this works, it will be fantastic as I do not want to buy too many gas gift cards.

Please let me know.

A safer and sure fire way is to buy gas gift cards at your supermarket and get the cash back from those. If you have an Amex Blue preferred, that is 6% cash back. And there is no debate as to whether it counts as I have never seen any supermarket purchase not count. Do the same with postage stamp purchases at the supermarket to get cash back off those.

Also, as noted by some already, some gas stations have discount points programs with local super market chains. Stop and Shop for instance gives you 1 Shell gas point for each dollar spent. Every 100 points gets you 10 cents off a gallon at the next refill. Better than nothing obviously. Stop and Shop's computer system is smart enough though to not count gift card or stamp purchases towards the Shell points.

Yes, simply put. I buy a Kroger gc (actually it's a branded turkey hill card) at the Turkey Hill gas station store and then use that gc to buy groceries. The kroger and Turkey Hill gc are interchangeable and can be used at either store.

HTH.

Usually in my neck of the woods, gas stations charge one price for cash/debit and a higher price for credit cards. When you use your gift card, you get the lower price. It's as if you are paying cash.
