Thread Details

First quarter 2013 we have the 5% bonus cash back off of gas purchases with our card.
https://creditcards.chase.com/fre...ivate.aspx

You can prolong the 5% by walking inside the gas station, and if they offer their brand gas gift cards, buy them. It has been confirmed by Chase that you will get the 5% extra when purchasing a gift card inside the store.

You also get extra savings when using your gift card at the pumps or inside as they count as non-credit card transactions so you'd get the cash price on the gas per gallon.

I usually buy a good size $ gas gift card when the quarter is about over so I can continue to reap the rewards after the expiration of the extra bonus.

Just a reminder of what has always worked for me.

What I did to confirm is after purchasing my gift card, I'd call Chase customer service and they can confirm your % cash back with that particular transaction. There's never been an issue when it wasn't 5%.

Also if you have a BI-LO near you and use BI-LO Perks, this helps to use along with your BI-LO gas perks at the pump.

Does anyone have a list of which gas stations worked successfully for them?

Which ones provide gift cards at the station itself?

Thanks
I've been doing it at Quiktrip no problem

WRONG! Yes you are saving because you aren't locking in a price for gas when you buy a giftcard. You buy a $100 GC and get 5% off (so effectively costing you $95). That $100 GC is still worth $100 if gas is 3.89/gal or 3.29/gal. You still get $100 worth of gas at a cost of $95

True...
i was not thinking of that ha

Hmm, and if they say no? You have a bunch of gas gift cards with worse CB than offered on other CC's.

This is much easier. Just go to your local CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc and buy $1,500 of gift cards for gas stations, etc.
I was trying to reach the $1500 limit and Rite aid only carries department store cards. No gas or
grocery cards. Does anyone know if walgreens has these ? No CVS here.

Yeah, but Penfed will only let you join if you fit certain criteria. They're like AAFES. 5% is pretty amazing these days though.
all you have to do is join a group on the website and deposit $5 into a bank account with them. it's easy and is all done through the penfed website

Just go inside the station that you usually use and ask if they offer gift cards. Pretty much only way to find out.

I usually use Spinx since that's where I can redeem my BI-LO fuel perks and they offer gift cards. Also I know BP offers cards inside their stations.

So I just went to the gas station for a few hundred in gas gift cards and got denied. I called Chase right away and they told me it was because of a out of state charge I made last night that was suspicious... sigh =/ They gas station attendant and others in there probably thought I was doing some fraud.
Anyway, while on the phone with the chase rep I asked if the 5% cash back on gas applied to gift cards too and she said no. Did they catch on to this trick?

My local Shell gas stations have one price for buying gas with a credit card and a lower price for using cash. I tried using my Shell gift card at the pump and it applied the higher credit card price. I went to the attendant to ask about this and guy said that it's correct that the higher credit card price applies to using gift cards as well. Does anyone have a different experience using Shell gift cards? I thought the gift cards would be treated like cash.

I go to Spinx and get charged the cash price. Weird about that station. A gift card is not a credit card so that doesn't make sense.

If you call up Chase and talk to a rep, they should confirm that you do indeed get 5% cash back for buying gift cards in a gas station. I've asked several times to confirm. After purchasing I even called to ask about that particular transaction and they confirmed that I received the 5%.

I went back into Chase.com email where I asked, but it expired so I can't post her.

If anyone wants to confirm just call them or email them thru your chase.com acct. They are super fast to respond...unless they are closed during this holiday.

There is always the possibility that they changed this but I don't think so. If anyone finds out for sure, please post.

sorry, forgot to include the donation. but yeah donate, then deposit $5 and you're good to go.

the only thing I don't like about penfed is they don't have billpay option from banking websites, you have to initiate the ACH from penfed's end.

And the amount you can transfer to other bank accounts for the first 6 months would be just 50$. But awesome Credit union - loan APRs are among the lowest!

I was charged CC price at a Valero for GC.

Shell gas stations in my area offer 5 cent discount/gallon for using a Shell GC.

Yesterday I used my gift card to purchase gas. I was given the cash price for gas which is cheaper.

Wouldn't it be smart to always buy the gas cards with your credit card since you get the cash back for purchasing the gas gift card with your credit card and you will always get the cash price. I'm going to start doing that instead of ever using my credit card at the pumps.
