Source? When I look at the results of the annual Consumer Reports survey, this is the rankings in reliability (the numbers represent the percentage of units requiring repairs or having serious problems):

Apple 8
Acer 10
Sony 10
Lenovo 10
HP 10
Toshiba 11
Gateway 11
Dell 12

Considering that Lenovo is either the world's #1 or #2 PC manufacturer (by volume), their numbers look pretty good. They're right up there with the best of the non-Apple manufacturers, though nobody is really dogging it.

Over the years I've used HP, IBM (now Lenovo), Lenovo, Toshiba, Acer, Dell and Gateway laptops (both personally and professionally). The only issues I've had with any of them are hinges that got a little loose (not unusably so) on the Gateway and Dell.

It is about 25% worse, and I play Skyrim on High with some 30 mods (most being high-res textures).

In any case, I have seen the Y480 and frankly it is the worst screen I ever saw. It looks like a one of those nice colorful t-shirts that has been washed too many times, and if you change your viewing angle by just a little, everything goes out of whack. It doesn't help that it is reflects everything around you, so you an effectively shave with it, which makes this worse. So, the issue is not just the low resolution of the display, which is still common nowadays anyhow, but the quality.

The Dell's screen (just as a comparison) has very good viewing angles, is of course brighter, and is completely non-reflective.

Bear in mind, I am not suggesting you need buy the Dell as I was just pointing out that if you are spending $820, you might as well spend $30 more for it instead.

They do, I'm on my work Laptop right now that is the Thinkpad T430s and it's 1600x900,

I am surprised that the PC manufactures are still making laptops with 1366*768 resolution....

Screen options are probably not an issue of business vs consumer lines as the Y500 with the 650M SLI comes with the HD display.


I may be alone in saying this, but I find 1600x900 to be about "just right." The 1080p on a 15.6" display in my mind tends to scale down icons and text so they look too dang for these set of eyes which are quickly approaching 30 years old.

I actually prefer it. I like my laptops to be portable. Plus, with lower res, you can play on native resolution with much less resources. I have a 23 inch monitor at home I hook it up to if I want a huge screen. This card would push 1080p no problems

So has this laptop shipped yet for anybody that actually ordered it? Just got the infamous "your order has been delayed" email from lenovo.

definately gonna be my next laptop......wont settle for anything less than this now......maybe i can find a better screen between now and summertime.....

You'd be better off saving that money and buying a full-fledged SSD and taking the DVD drive out and using the 1TB as a mass storage drive.

The dGPU in this laptop is beast, top tier and the other one quoted doesnt even compare. Nice screen on the other one so its your call.
