Nothing but great experiences with HP. Lasted a long time, does everything asked, etc. I am on my 4th one. The others I have passed down to family members or girlfriend. Current HP is 4 years old and running well even with old Core2Quad, GT130M, dual 7200rpm drives, and more. For so much heat, I'm surprised its lasted this long.

I have a lenovo thinkpad x220
I've had it sent for warranty 3x- each time they replaced the motherboard even though the first time they just needed to replace the keyboard, the 2nd time was a scratch on the lid that I believe happened during shipment, and the third was my own fault. I did not purchase an extended warranty either (just the regular 1 year that comes with the laptop)
they keyboard is great - i did replace the hard drive with a samsung 830 - love it.
The warranty is hassle free, the stock battery life on this is (actual) 9+ hrs.No complaints!
I have both the touchpad and the eraser so if I dont like the touchpad i can disable but it is ok.The one thing i dont like is the Fn key is where I'm used to the right Ctrl button being.
I have a Dell XPS as well that I like,
And as far as Asus, I totally respect the company, I have their router, I always use their MBs when I build desktops, but the chicklet keys and overall interaction has not been great for me. I never owned their laptop, just played with one from a friend

Also, my friend had an HP laptop, when he called support, rather than getting help, he got a person who was trying to sell him a new laptop. I would say it was a one off, but he called again from my home and got the same reaction. Not what you want to hear when your laptop needs service, that rather than repairing it under warranty they want to sell you a new one. I hope this is a unique experience or that they've changed their ways.

How long do these discounts normally last?

EDIT: Question answered, 2/15. Now I'm going to see if a rep is generous enough to offer a discount or quote.

EDIT2: Best i could get was a $10 discount, which is basically what they're offering students.

That's a tough call.. The XPS15 is a great laptop, on paper, just not executed too well. The model with the nVidia discrete graphics has heat throttling issues; playing demanding games causes GPU overheating, so expect performance dropouts.
If you're fine with the just intel graphics, then it's not a bad laptop; although its a bit spendy for what you get.
Hopefully the refresh model (l522x) will address this major flaw

I have a Lenovo Y470, and the thing is a beast. Excellent build quality, screaming graphics performance, and an i7 processor all in a 14" body. Nothing but positive to say about it. I've owned Dell's and HP's in the last two years, and the my Y470 is actually the best built and most powerful. I bought mine from the outlet store about 16 months ago, and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

With that said, this Y400 is a really slick looking laptop! They're clearly going after the gaming community with this body style. Those looking at laptop gaming boutique's should really consider this model or the y500 if you want a 1080p screen.

I am returning 2 y400 laptops. I ordered one it arrived quick but had physical defects , separating bezel from LCD and also dents in the bezel itself.... they send a replacement that had not only the same defects but also a dent on the lid of the laptop.... a sales manager was supposed to call me today however received no such call. I love the stats on the laptop but the build quality varies greatly.... be warned.

I think Blu-Ray is a thing of the past now as well, we have moved on to mobile storage i.e. HDs and Cloud storage. I dont see Blu-Ray to be a big selling point.

How do you handle warranty claim returns on the laptop? Does Lenovo cover shipping cost?

HP, ASUS, Lenovo, etc are mostly built in China with parts coming from the same factories. All of them are built with cheap parts. That's how these companies make money. They use the cheapest parts and maximize profits. So there is no use to comparing which laptops use superior parts over the others. Each brand makes flag ship laptops which use better materials and lower end laptops which uses cheaper parts for the consumers on a budget. It makes no sense comparing just a brand name.

I used to dislike Lenovo because of my experience with a Thinkpad laptop when Lenovo first acquired IBM Thinkpad brand.

I am using x230 and 90% satisfied with the laptop except the trackpad!

So yeah, Lenovo can be a trusted brand as well as Samsung.
