Thanks for the post! I was on the final step before pulling the trigger on the OP. However, I was seriously grappling with the idea of spending $60 on a USB 2.0 drive which also happens to spin at 5400RPM.


For $10 more, I pulled the trigger on the USB 3.0 version, regardless what speed the drive spins at, throughput will be vastly better than that of the OP.. Finally, it's shipping from Amazon so I feel good if there should be any issues..


These other guys need a "name makeover."

It's actually not a bad deal, however at least for me it would be $74.18 w/ tax, while I picked up this one from Buy.com for $57 (w/ 5% cashback) and no tax. So $17.19 more for USB 3.0? Depends on whether you take advantage of USB 3.0 w/ your computers. Also, a lot of ppl are simply going to extract the drive from the enclosure anyway.

You could always look at it as getting a 1TB HDD + a free USB 3.0 enclosure aswell.

I know they have always been the owners of the buy.com brand but they have zero name recognition in the states whereas buy.com has always been a respectable runner up to amazon.

Yes. Depending on drive manufacturer, they even have some lower rpm drives, like Western Digital has 5200, but it's usually 5400 and 7200.

The 7200 is only really offered to those "OMG HIGH PERFORMANCE LAPTOPS" but aren't often great ideas as the extra power usage isn't something laptops like, that, and the faster revs mean more heat, also not a laptop thing.

Server drives are often 10k or 15k, because you're going for performance and heat/noise isn't a factor when they're in a data center or closet.

I'd think it is representing a shift in their business strategy. I think they're wanting to shift to a middle-man, like how Amazon lists the product, but it's sold through some 3rd party. If they do it way, they have an almost unlimited amount of product, making their fulfillment/producers happy by moving product, and they don't have to deal with any of the expenses of warehousing or shipping/transporting any of the merchandise, which gives them tremendous margin.

I ordered a 2TB WD passport to back up my media (getting scared not having it backed up) but I could use a 1TB for travel. hopefully this comes back in stock.

off topic but can you get Windows Media Center to record on these portable drives instead of computer hard drive?
