12.xx near me in SE MI. These are actually pretty good for areas that need omi-directional light. I bought two of these when they were on sale for 15 6+ months back for my porch. They are BRIGHT and they are dimmable. If the price drops around me, I might consider getting a few to replace some older non-omni led lights.

I agree with you. For this price, there's not enough benefit. Maybe if these were burning 2 watts or something, but for 13.5 watts, there really isn't much benefit over a CFL. Changing CFL's is a non-issue, as they really don't burn out that fast. Also, with regards to mercury in CFL, just be careful and don't drop it. Not the biggest deal in the world. I'm going to go out on a limb and say these LED bulbs are all hype.. for now. Why do they output so much eat? that's where the 13 watts is going. .5 is actually going to produce the light. After they sell enough of these, they will make a new iteration which burn half the amount of energy, and people will again buy a whole new set. This is just my guess, but that's how marketing works. 3g, 4g, iphone 3, 3s, 4, 5, etc.. |

First, you can't compare these to the cheapest CFLs you can find because these are dimmable. A CFL that can dim will cost almost as much, and I've never seen a CFL that can dim below 20% successfully.
LED bulbs (+/-) +Light produced is typically better liked than CFL. +LED bulb=instant on +LED bulb should last 2-5 times as long as CFL, 25-50 as long as an incandescent. +LED bulbs tend to be less affected by the cold. -Cost -Do not do well in enclosures due to the heat -Light can be unidirectional -Not sure how they do in ceiling fans |

The only way I'd pay ~$10 for a LED (maybe more) is if it consumed so little electricity, i never needed to turn it off.... (~4 watts or less).. Maybe I'm dreaming, but that would be ideal. I have hallways in my house (Attached row home) that are very dark, due to no windows. |

I think another reason folks aren't switching en masse is the fact that many of 'us' switched to CFL over the last few years and don't need to replace them yet. In new applications, I'd be all over LED(probably combined with CFL); but I'm still running CFLs I put in years ago. Our porch light runs an average of 6 hours a night...it's almost 5 years old...23w flood...no idea what 'color' it is; but it's doing fine. When the time comes to replace it, I have a dozen or so CFL lamps waiting. I'm replacing them throughout the house as needed. The dimming feature is of little importance to me, certainly not worth 3-10x the cost of the CFL.
