Craftsman 3/8" Drive Digi-Click Torque Wrench $55 + Free In-Store Pick Up

I thought this was a space-age vuvuzela from the picture. Disappointing.

Harbor Freight has the click style ones for 9.99 with a coupon nearly every month. They work perfectly fine, just make sure to buy all 3 and use the one that the needed torque fits somewhere in the middle of it's range.

I've been using the 1/2" torque wrench from HF for years without any problems, and I recommend it if you use it from time to time. Now, I can't say that about the 3/8" version. I have returned that one about 3 times under their lifetime warranty.

So I was looking at this one from HF http://www.harborfreight.com/3-8-...h-807.html . According to the webpage it says lifetime, however in the manual you can download it says 90 days.

yeah you really need a 1/2 minimum for most of that stuff... Anything major with the suspension, wheel, brake etc is going to be more, some smaller stuff you can get away with. 3/8 is really more for like the small bolts you run in to when building engines and stuff, especially with fasteners going in to aluminum and for that I'm not sure I'd trust a cheap $60 craftsman, but it's a hell of a lot better than nothing.

if you are just doing lug nuts, grab the $9.99 torque wrench from harbor freight.

So does anyone ever get a clicker style wrench recalibrated or do they just buy another HF one? Where does one go to get a clicker style one recalibrated?

Anyway, mechanical click torque wrenches are by far the most useful. 9 times out of 10 having to maneuver yourself into position to look at the readout is going to be more of a pain than it's worth. Easier to just pull on your mechanical torque wrench until you hear the click.

The HF clickers aren't accurate out of the box to begin with.

As far as where to get calibration done, any tool truck will be able to send it out (the really good guys like my father might be able to do it on the truck. The calibrator isn't cheap, but he's upsold a lot of guys to better wrenches because he has it on the truck and can prove that their cheap wrenches are junk). There are plenty of companies out there that specialize in calibrating tools, a simply Google search of "torque wrench calibration service" will give you pages of options.

You don't need to position yourself to look at the readout. You set it to the torque you want, the wrench beeps when you reach that torque. The better ones also vibrate.

The 3/8" and 1/2" Harbor Freight "click" torque wrenches are durable and accurate. You can get them for $10 with the Harbor Freight super coupon found in auto and mortorcycle magazines. I personally use beam type torque wrench. It's a snap to calibrate and very accurate if used properly.

I love my digital torque wrenches. Set the number and go! It's nice not having to reset back to zero like a clicker, and it beats dealing with parallax error when using a beam, especially if I'm positioned in an awkward position.
