Probably could have gotten away with that $10 rosewill 8x 10/100 switch from last week. Most of my network gear is limited to 10/100. Oh well might as well start futere proofing.

I actually have one of each. If I had to choose, I'd obviously take the metal, but the plastic one works perfectly fine. Thermal-wise, I've had 0 issues with the plastic version. I have not had to reboot/reset either of them.. been running for a couple of years.

The "only" difference I see is that the plastic one has less weight so it may tend to lean back if your cables go straight off a desk (you have the unit on the back edge of a desk).. if you don't care for that, no reason NOT to get this one unless the metal version is the same price. If you plan to have it on the floor, there's no issue.

Edit: so, my solution was to have my plastic unit moved forward just a bit so the ethernet cables can rest partially on the desk.

I have the metal. I'd just wait for that to drop again if you're not in a rush for one of these... Either way it'll be a good switch, though.

I know the idea of having to use additional materials/resources to make something like this work better off SD is somewhat sacrilegious, but I solved this this problem on my (upstairs) switch by using an unused 3M strip that I had lying around. Velcro could help alleviate this issue as well...if need be of course.

Can I use this switch to share internet via hardwire connections to different rooms if I place it behind a cable modem? I have a dedicated ip provided by my ISP. I just want to distribute the internet to 3 more rooms which already are wired with cables.

Absolutely, your cable modem will connect to a port on this switch then the 3 rooms will connect to whatever ports you wish on this switch. The switch will distribute that internet signal to those rooms and you will have additional ports for future use.
