I have both a Roku and an Apple TV.

Roku is good for the variety of channels (which I don't really use, but for others it's a necessity), and the fact that they have the Amazon streaming (since I'm a prime member). The Roku remote app for iPhone is outstanding (My 18 month old has hidden the remote somewhere we still haven't been able to find).

Apple TV has the Airplay and a much, much better User Interface for Netflix (in my opinion of course). The Remote app for iPhone is not as good as the Roku.

I prefer the Apple TV to the Roku. Airplay is pretty much worth the cost on it's own. I will also keep the Roku for as long as Apple TV does not have the Amazon streaming service, which will probably be forever.

Airplay is the only real reason to buy it if you own a ipad or iphone. I'm very pleased with it just so i can use the ipad on the tv screen

Agreed that Airplay is pretty much worth the cost alone. I use Airplay nearly everyday for various reasons. My most common use for it, although very basic, is to stream my Spotify Premium account through TV/sound system. It allows me to wirelessly play my music through my sound system while providing an attractive UI when I have guests over.

It also allows me to mirror my iPad when I'm attempting to show a group of friends something really quickly. Instead of huddling around my tablet or phone, I can just throw it up on a larger screen in seconds.

yes... whenever we have guests over... and we want to look at pictures, websites, or even just showing some dumb app... airplay makes it a blast

I think the apple tv is a great device if you have a lot of itunes content, if you own a mac it's almost mandatory (especially one that you'd never plug into a TV) and if you own an ipad and/or iphone, airplay is pretty useful. But otherwise, a ROku is at least $20 cheaper and accesses more services. Blu-ray players are even better deals since they work with DVDs and blu-rays too. And the whole media streaming. My Sony blu-ray player (cinavia support not withstanding) is a but more useful for me than my apple tv. DLNA support, amazon, vudu, cinemanow...

That is of course IF Apple deems the content worthy of AirPlay. Buy an HD movie off of iTunes and try to AirPlay it...

not sure what that is.. the airplay mirrors exactly what is on the macbook on to your tv with a click of a button. I use it mainly for ESPN3 and iPhoto

You can now use xbmc + naviX on the raspberry pi (use the lightweight version designed for raspbmc). If you want a device that plays absolutely everything (including untouched rips of blu rays) and don't want to spend much, get the raspberry pi running raspbmc for $35. I'm not hating on the ATV3 - I have one that we use primarily for netflix and youtube.

Plus if you wait a couple months, you can grab an Ouya with way better hardware, open development, and XBMC support.

I really wish someone would jailbreak the ATV3. I have one we got free from Apple as an apology gift when we got our iPhone 5 phones but haven't taken it out of the box yet since we have the ATV2.
