I would guess this is because at the range the first club you grab is the driver. Then 2/3 or 3/4 of the bucket is gone and you grab a 4 iron or something and hit 5-6 balls and finish by crushing the driver. Next time at the range, try working your way up from small to big and finish the last 5-6 with the driver. Then hit the putting green as it is generally free to hit as much as you want. The driver really only has a couple of uses on the golf course while the irons are used on every hole. As funny as it sounds, the best advice ever got as a newb was to leave the woods at home and just play the irons. Did that for years. Took some swallowing of the pride for a while but it didn't take long to significantly out play my 'big driver' friends who could not hit irons for shite.

It's funny. I have heard many people tell me the same thing about not using the driver as a beginner, but to be honest, I crush my drives. Can't hit the irons worth spit, but I can tee off like a monster. Go figure.

The only unseen advice I can give on Iron is don't try to "crush" it. Also much different to hit off mat vs. the real stuff with irons.

Also L2putt... 50% of your shots are usually putts and chips, yet its probably 10% of the practice.
