They charge DC, whether it is in your car, or an adapter plugged into AC at home. Car chargers take 12V DC down to 5V DC for USB devices. I think the AC talk was just comparing it to the speed of charging at a wall socket.

You bought it "ships and sold by Amazon" or "fulfilled by Amazon"?

A lot of Amazon's independent vendors (fulfilled by Amazon) are selling counterfeit versions from that same link. If you buy the "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com", you'll definitely get a genuine Motorola product.

The genuine product gets great reviews. It has a good build quality and has worked well for me and many folks I know. Though like any other product, there may be the occasional dud. The counterfeit products are largely complete crap. The build quality of the fakes is awful, which is why I'd strongly recommend avoiding ebay and independent Amazon sellers for products (like this) that have suffered such heavy counterfeiting.

For heavily counterfeited products like this, either buy it directly from a large merchant or just buy some generic cheap chinese charger for a dollar. If you buy this from anywhere that isn't a large, well known retailer, you'll probably be getting a product that's no better than a $1 charger. Why pay extra?

What they're talking about is whether the charger will charge your phone/device as if it's plugged into a wall adapter(AC), or if it'll charge like it's plugged into a USB port. If you look at your Nexus 4's battery info with it plugged into a wall charger, you'll notice the status at the top will say "<battery %> - Charging (AC)" [imgur.com]. If you plug it into a USB port(desktop, laptop, some external batteries), it'll say "<battery %> - Charging (USB)" [imgur.com]. The difference between these two modes is that AC mode generally means your device is getting the full current your charger is outputting(usually around 1A for most phones and 2.1A for most tablets), whereas USB mode is limited to something like 500mA and charges slower.

People ask if car chargers will charge in AC mode because a lot of the generic ones are wired in a way that makes some phones see them as a USB port, and therefore charge a lot slower. I've personally found that my tablet(Nexus 7) is a lot less finicky than my phone and will charge in AC mode with most chargers/cables with the exception of a generic cable that came with one of my chargers. My phone(Galaxy Nexus) on the other hand, will only charge in AC mode with an OEM(Samsung/ASUS) cable and one out of the three car chargers I have.

This is pretty crap unless you actually use mini usb. The adapter comes off too often and is hard to find in your car.

For me it would cost $11.61 shipping included. Thats $8.36 more than eBay.

My point wasn't that Amazon had the best price, it was that buying this particular product from ebay is pointless. You're very likely not getting an authentic Motorola charger, you're getting something that looks like a Motorola charger but has the internals of a generic $1 charger.

If all you want is the cheapest charger, you may as well buy a cheap generic Chinese charger at the dollar store and save $2, because that's probably what you'll get if you buy the $3 "Motorola" charger for sale on ebay.

its genuine motorola charger. 1 dead out of 3 that i bought. it's dead within 2 months. the phone's screen kept cycling on/off without charging anything. motorola sign is still lid well but it's useless.
