I've been been looking to put together a budget HTPC and stumbled across this deal at NewEgg. Haven't seen anything remotely close to this price with Blu-ray. 2GB memory and 250GB is a bonus. Throw in some extra memory and an SSD and you've got a killer HTPC.

lol no but really, IMO, anything with an atom CPU is too slow and i'm not buying it after i've had the "luck" to experience them in my netbooks

you need at least a normal c2d, "new-age" celeron, or AMD apu's to get what you're looking for out of a HTPC.

then again you said budget, so if by budget you can deal with it working slowly/lagging, then by all means.

Won't do CPU intensive things like Silverlight (Netflix).

But will work great if you have software that utilizes the GPU. Plus, these things look ubercool. Like if Ikea sold computers.

I like the look, so will this thing run steam so I can play games on my big screen? I just want something that can handle simple pc games. Not even advanced ones. Think dawn of war. There's just some things you can't do on a console. The only other thing ill use it for is to play movies and music from the hard drive.

Thanks, ill look for something else. Amazing that today's pcs can't play games that my eight year laptop can.

I'm not holding my breath for the steambox though. All that tach crammed into the case of an old Sony dream system speaker. I think the failure rates due to just overheating will make a first gen Xbox look good.

Thanks guys. The Nvidia Ion puts this a step above most Atom netbooks in my opinion. I'm really only using XBMC, Chrome, and streaming 1080p MKVs over gigabit. Blu-ray, e-sata, USB 3 were all a bonus. I had no problems putting in another DDR3 204 pin 2GB chip to get 4GB in Win8 x64. Thinking about using another one of these as a small backup head attached to e-sata in a safe.

Can anyone recommend a good HTPC keyboard/mouse combo? I've tried Lenovo and a few others and have been disappointed with all.

I have no problems with the ATOM cpu, as long as you are not trying to exceed its limits.
I have my old netbook (ACER Atom) sitting and running CouchPotato, Sabnzbd, Sickbeard, and my own Newznab servers.
At one time I even had Visual Studio 2008 Pro on it....it compiled slowly (which I expected), but it did work.

I am also able to stream multiple files at one from it, to multiple wired PCs in my house. For me a low consumption CPU, battery backup (netbook), works great. Next for it is an additional web cam for monitoring.

Email/web surfing = ok
Games = No
Network Share (FreeNAS) = ok

Yeah, a few years back I have Acer Revo 1600 hooked to my bigscreen and it was good for netflix and amazon unbox, hulu, dvd rips. Even stock with only ion driver update. Never used this model but unless you want a high-end blueray rip player this should work.

That revo I got great "open box" a whim for $160 when CCity wend under. This is very similar to the review that newegg users praised. Depends on what you need, small and low noise. I miss my revo but it is now pc for 7yr old. I Just picked up the $50 Sony BDP S390 BlueRay, and while it is good...for geek use a small pc connected works best. Non-techie family members force stupid blueray or xbox...and even xbox has them lost non netflix content.
