Agreed, my 5 dollar Cree led flash from eBay out shine the led mag light I have at home. Also much lighter to hold for attic repairs.

D cell batteries kill it.

Maglites were never propular for how bright they were. It was how durable and unbreakable that was their thing.

But if you want, there are LED upgrade kits for these things, or you can buy a cheap 4D LED flashlight or lantern with it and steal the bulb if its compatible. May not make it a whole lot brighter, but the batteries in it will be useful a lot longer before they die from use or die on the shelf.

Even some cheap Chinese LED lights are pretty durable these days. Weakest link are the bulbs on the old Mag's, they always die when you most need them. Won't happen to you with a LED light. I say this is a waste of money...

If people are thinking of getting one for self defense, the 5D is pretty heavy and hard to wield. A 3D or 4C will give you much more speed and still have plenty of weight behind it.

I'd say a light that can be run over by a truck is a good light to have.

These are great for t-ball stands, bout it. Antique outdated light that will not be there for you when you want to use it. I tossed all of mine.

Wow, just flashed back 10 years to when these were actually sought after flashlights and people did the bulb mod. Now I can't imagine putting 5 D batteries in something that isn't all that bright and weighs 15 lbs....

It cracks me up how people always mention that they could run over their Maglite with a truck. How often have you accidentally run over your flashlight with your truck? Can't say I have... However my $12 Meritline flashlight goes to work with me every day on a holster, has been dropped, slammed, gotten wet, you name it - and it still works. That's all I need. And yes, the best one to use as a weapon is probably the 3D as it is the perfect balance of weight to swing at someone.
