Although I just got UPS shipment notification for my refurb BDP-S390, does anyone have any personal preferences between the the Sony BDP-S390 and Panasonic DMP-BDT220 ($80 @ Costco) assuming they were both new units?
Yes, I have read the reviews (like this one) and the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 and Sony BDP-S390 are the ones that bubbled to the top (bluray/streaming [netflix/amazon]/wifi). |

UPDATE: Actually...maybe not. See reply...
What I posted before playing around more: Downloaded and burnt what I believe is the last SACD-R capable firmware (M11.R.0320, the player came loaded with M11.R.0369, the first version to block SACD-R) and it won't let me downgrade, saying the player is already updated. So I guess the Google Code SACD-R comment was wrong? Or is there a way, like via a service menu? I guess I can use this for pressed SACDs or give it to my sister (she was gonna order one but it was sold out by then). Still, blech. Last edited by davidbix; 02-19-2013 at 01:24 PM.. |

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!
While. out of the box, the player wouldn't even recognize SACD-Rs as valid, I decided to try a SACD-R in my other, fully updated BDP-S390, which is connected directly to a TV. It recognized the disc as a SACD, but gave me a "No sound will be output to the device connected via HDMI" error. It did output SACD audio over the analog outputs. Since something was working in the updated/direct to TV player, I updated the refurb, which is connected to my Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver. It plays SACD-Rs perfectly in both DSD Bitstream and decoding to LPCM 176.4 kHz. So yes, with the current firmware (M.11.R.0422), SACD-Rs work perfectly if the BDP-S390 is connected to a receiver, which you're using if you care about the feature, anyway. It's weird that it gives a HDMI copy protection error connected directly to the TV, though. |

Got mine today, hooked it up this evening. Netflix streaming only works for a few minutes at a time before it stops and buffers, after which it plays for a few more minutes before buffering and only playing audio. It does this through Wifi and being connected through an Ethernet connection.
Getting sent back to Newegg tomorrow. |

Got mine yesterday. This is a great unit. I had issues with "the A/V receiver displays LPCM or stereo instead of Dolby or DTS" and just called Sony up and they checked my blu-ray player settings and determined it was a receiver setting. They transferred me to their receiver (it's a Sony STRDH520) department and after trouble-shooting for about 10 minutes they determined the correct fix and it sounds and looks amazing.
I plugged in a USB hard drive and played several mkv movie files and they sound and look way better playing from this unit when compared to playing directly from my computer. Netflix worked great too. Last edited by synikil; 02-20-2013 at 06:49 AM.. Reason: fix sentence |

Seems like it could be a problem with your internet service provider and lack of internet speed. Who is your ISP and what is your internet speed throughout different times of the day? Go to www.speedtest.net and let us know. |

What bothers me is that Newegg sells this device claiming:
Limited Warranty period (parts): 90 days Limited Warranty period (labor): 90 days In the box I received was a warranty insert that says the player has a 30 day warranty. Hopefully Newegg will stand behind the for 90 days. I don't think these were refurbished by Sony, not sure if 3rd party refurb is a common practice. Often times when the manufacturer refurbs an item, they'll put new parts in or on the item. For instance, if the case is scratched, they'll replace that piece. |
