You dont have to buy them from them,to use any movies or songs.But you still need to sync the media with itunes to get them in your ipad.
Or you can use a file manager like ifunbox to transfer the media(in the converted format) into the tab,if you know where to put them.

No wasy way to add external storage to an ipad. I think you can buy an adapter for a memory card though.

Some competitors offer SD card slots, or even a usb port but those all run Android or other software. Not Apple's iOS. There are some options for you. I know Seagate has a wireless external hard drive which can connect to the ipad to watch movie's etc, but when I looked into it, reviews were pretty bad.

Also look into certain apps like dropbox, or splashtop desktop streamer. Dropbox lets you tap into the cloud to access content (2GB free). Splashtop lets you control your desktop or laptop from your ipad so you can access content stored there. I've used it to watch videos without a problem but for some reason, for the last 6 months it hasn't worked so well (I get some lag and buffering issues). There are competitors to those apps as well.
