Free Blu-ray Ripper to MKV (Windows) - Aiseesoft - Today only

I guess this software came in handy with the free Valentines day codes yesterday at RedBox. 5 free rentals per card for each code. That's a lot of ripping!

You would be surprised at the picture quality. For the most part, depending on viewing distance and compression ratio, you would most likely NOT be able to tell the difference. I've used Handbrake in the past and have gone with an 18 quality level, which looks really good.

this is only to COPY BD into MKV.
No ripping, meaning you will get 20+ GB movie on your drive... at least this is what I can conclude from screen shot. It clearly states LOOSELESS.
I used Aiseesoft BluRipper and this one is damn quick, mainly due to AMD/nVidia acceleration. It is much faster than Handbrake (free though).
However, you can manage how the MKV will be compressed.



Hence, the title of this deal should be changed.

I couldn't be bothered. If the movie is not worth owning, it's not worth ripping. You can torrent any crappy movie any day of the week. You would actually save money on gas by torrenting the crappy movies you spent all day Saturday ripping because you got a free rental code. Seriously, that's a waste of time. Just sayin'.

If I download the software to my removable HD and get the reg. code in e-mail. Can I installed and run on multiple computers? Or the reg code has to be inputed once only online, if so, each computer needs a reg. code to activate it.

I find it odd that format factory does a conversion from mkv to whatever format I want in high quality in about an hour on my computer. Yet handbrake is taking 4x longer. I kept the same resolution and bitrate on both programs.

It's likely that whatever fast conversion utility you're using makes use of the Intel QuickStep technology in your CPU, which allows for hardware-accelerated video encoding.

Handbrake encodes all in software, which makes it significantly slower but it does mean that it's compatible across all CPUs.

Technically, YES. In Handbrake, you can set what resolution you want.

1080p will be a much larger file than a 720p, obviously. But depending on your viewing distance and compression quality, you might never be able to tell the difference. I'm sure if you sit up against the TV, yes, you would be able to tell.

While I agree with what you're saying regarding QuickSync's faster transcoding, my motherboard is the P67 chipset and that does NOT enable quicksync regardless of any software that may take advantage of it.
When I did transcode whole DVDs to mp4s using handbrake it took all of 5-7 mins and constantly got fps of around 400.

I'll have to further investigate this when I get home. Thanks for the input.

There seems to be a bit of discussion over hardware accelerated converting vs software. While software may be slower, I've always heard that the resulting video files look much better. It's hard to do an A/B comparison because I don't know of any quality software which has both. For example, DVDFab software which is good for ripping does a crappy job with MKV conversions (whether or not you enable hardware acceleration). It would be a moot point comparing the two. I haven't tried this software yet, but all of the other "free" ones that pop up here from time to time have been absolute garbage. They either have had very limited options and/or totally ruined the audio by downmixing it to stereo. Just because it's faster doesn't make it better.

EDIT: I should also add that if you're going to compare straight rips (keeping the same resolution, bitrate, etc), you may not see too much difference between the good and the bad software. It's more likely that you'll see a huge difference when trying to reduce it too a much smaller file size. That's where Hanbrake shines - as I believe I mentioned earlier in this thread you can make great looking Blu-ray/HD DVD conversions weighing in at less than 5GB with that software (a typical hour and a half movie, obviously if the movie is longer or you want HD audio it's going to be a bit larger). Just browse any AV type forum and see what everyone is using. Handbrake is going to come up more than any other.

Has anyone downloaded the software and tested it? No adware, crapware, viruses, right? these folks legit?

For free, in-4-1.3D BD to MKV conversion? I'm all over it. Time to test this out.

Uhm, yeah, no thanks, I don't want 25GB files. I can probably run Hand Brake to reduce down the size. Still, I'm back to a two process conversion. Would rather be able to do a one step conversion.
