Free Blu-ray Ripper to MKV (Windows) - Aiseesoft - Today only

Simply older hardware would be my guess. OpenCL and CUDA are no where near as fast as the newer Intel QuickSync and or even VEC and NVENC. Plus an SSD, possibly more ram, and certainly a quad core proc would certainly trim down those times.

Funny thing is that my laptop is nearly identical, time-wise (core2 duo 2.2ghz, crucial m4 ssd, ati mobile 4500 512mb, 4gb ram). Not too concerned, since I can rip two at once between the two of them... but would love to get it down closer to the length of the movie.

I'm thinking that the CPU is doing the bulk of the work here. In my case, useing cpu only, a rip still takes 90+ minutes on a quad core i5 @ 4.8 GHz, 16GB, SSD. If you only consider the raw processing power, seems to scale pretty linearly. Your times dont seem overly slow.

If looking to upgrade, I cant say enough good things about QuickSync making use of the new intel onboard GPU. I'm no intel fanboy, but it's made a believer out of me.

Is it LEGAL to backup your purchased blu-ray? What if you get caught and found to have backup copies of blu-ray movies on our hard drive?

I think every blu-ray has a disclaimer stating that copying is illegal but it does not specify if it applies to purchased copy though.

Any lawyers in this forum could provide some advice?

Just out of curiousity, would this software work with ripping BR discs from say a Redbox or Netflix?

Is it illegal to rent a blu-ray from redbox and then rip it to my hard drive for later viewing?

I have a friend who would like to know. He intends to delete the copy once he gets around to watching it.

Ripping your own is legal. Ripping a rental, or copying a rip from someone else is not...

No, it is not technically legal to backup your own blu-rays, sadly. The home recording act does not apply to it, unfortunately, to my understanding. I HIGHLY doubt anyone would EVER get in any trouble for backing up their own movies, if they maintain possession of said movie and do not distribute the digital copy.

Yes, that is illegal. You can borrow movies online for longer periods, say 30 days to get around to watching, but you pay a premium for that.

Seriously, if you are worried about getting arrested for ripping a few BLU Rays or DVD's for personal use, you need to seek therapy! I am not a lawyer but as long as you don't transfer them to another person and you legally can prove ownership of the original, Fair Use should apply.

And even if it does not, and its technically illegal....do you really think anybody will waste the time prosecuting you? Unless you are running a server torrenting them or selling them on the street, you probably have a better chance of being hit by a meteorite.

But that being said, don't do it...you wouldn't want to get in trouble

Go back a page and look at post #37. There is a beta code you can apply to keep using MakeMKV for free.

Agreed. Don't torrent (and don't sell them on the street corner in cheap cases) and you will be fine. But don't do it.
