Fair-use covers bypassing CSS, but making full copies is not explicitly listed as fair-use. As far as I know, nobody has been prosecuted for making copies of media they purchased, it's usually the distribution of copies that draws attention. I haven't researched the subject in the last year, but hadn't heard of anything major changing. Personally, I believe we have the right to do what we want with things we purchase, so long as we aren't doing things that infringe on other people's rights (running people down with my car, for example). Personal use copies of purchased media seems right. |

I think we just have to understand that some people are very concerned about obeying the law, whether it makes sense to you and I or not. I was just annoyed that fogmoose (the true troll here) mocked this person as "needing therapy" because they asked the question. wth ... since fogmoose has now gone all high-and-mighty on me too, I might as well drop the pretense I was trying to preserve with that change to my original post. You know, I know, everyone knows that fogmoose sounds like the kidn of guy that is ripping BDs illegally like a madman, lol. |

http://lifehacker.com/5559007/the...collection Works like a charm. Uses both Handbrake and MakeMKV. I've done about 30 BD rips. They look great through my ATV2 via my 2TB LAN cloud. Finally!!

1. The chance of losing my blu-ray is exceedingly rare, and I don't have a toddler that might abuse my disks. 2. I like to watch the best quality video and my oppo player does a great job. Watching it on MKV without Oppo's stunning video circuit is a downgrade for me. 3. I have a sony portable blu-ray player (10' screen) for long car trips so I don't need the portability of a ripped copy. 4. I hate the disclaimer screen and premovie commercials. But that's only less than 5 mins of my time if I fast forward, and it takes more than 10 times the time to back up a blu-ray disk, not worth it. |

Edit: Just to confirm; that guide is slightly dated just by references to ripbot264 and some of the options they have in Hanbrake, but I do agree with what he was saying about 720vs1080 - there's not much difference in content but it makes a huge difference in file size. They use that RF slider in the guide (most people tend to), but I've always had much better results as far as image quality goes (and most importantly file size) with setting an average bitrate. I mentioned before that I use a setting of 4000 and seems to work well @ 1280x720 (you may want that setting higher if you're keeping the source maximum resolution). I also have a SD DVD profile (source maximum resolution) that I created and use 1700 for the average bitrate setting. I use auto passthrough for the audio (I usually select DTS if available, but some titles I like to keep DTS-HD) and have all the auto passthru check boxes selected. Lastly, I've found this default advanced setting to give me some trouble in the past so I always set it to off, "Pyramidal B-Frames". Last edited by RyanL; 02-15-2013 at 08:32 AM.. |
