Apple tv 2nd gen refurbished 87.99 on ebay

If airplay or HDMI out to your tv does what you are wanting then there is no need to get a apple tv. IMO the apple tv just makes it easier. Once its JB and hooked up to your TV, thats it. You will have a update from time to time, but XBMC has a auto update feature or notification to allow you to do the update itself. As far as a 3rd gen jailbreak goes, not happening anytime soon to the best of my knowledge.

When I see a SDK for the Apple tv then I might believe that, but until then just analysts speculation.

Question: Other than being able to jailbreak the ATV2, whats that much demand for it beyond its 720P? ATV3 is much better(but cant be jailbroken, which I am expecting to happen soon). Experts.. help me to understand this.

Find something else with a footprint this small that can have XBMC installed and can also utilize airplay.

I have an PC in my main system. But for a family room, nothing beats a hacked AppleTV in my opinion. XBMC can play just about anything I throw at it. I use it to play ISO, MP4, MKV, etc from my NAS. Airplay is the icing on the cake. I can play my home videos from my iPhone, stream music from my iTunes library or phone, and now use HBO GO via airplay.

The only downside is the mediocre video processing at times. My son loves the old Transformers cartoons and they can be a bit jittery since they are 24fps.

I'd love to replace it with something a little more powerful, but I haven't found anything small that can do it this well.

Jailbreaking the ATV2 is the reason why there's so much demand for it. That and they haven't been made in over a year so supply is very small.

I have an ATV3, and a jailbroken ATV2 with ATV flash. I prefer my ATV3, using Plex with either my Iphone or Ipad. The Plex interface is so much better, and more reliable, than the ATV flash media player on ATV2. There really isn't anything I can do on my jailbroken ATV2 that I can't accomplish with ATV3. HBOGO is now airplay compatible, Showtime should follow shortly. And, of course, the menus are snappier on the ATV faster processor) and its 1080 v 780. if I wasn't so lazy, I'd sell the ATV2 on Ebay, buy another ATV3, and pocket the difference.

While I don't disagree with you, many people do not have an iPhone or iPad to airplay videos to their appletv3. It also add another layer of complication for troubleshooting if you ever have issues.

I wish I could just get Plex as a native app for AppleTV and call it a day. I'd pay $15-20 for it. Cmon apple work with us here!
