Apple tv 2nd gen refurbished 87.99 on ebay

The ATV2 can be jailbroken; however, to use the fun stuff, you'll want to check what the firmware version is, and whether you can downgrade if it's on the latest firmware. While there is a jailbreak available for iOS6.1 (aka 5.2 on the ATV), XBMC is not yet supported on this version of iOS. If these ATV2 models already come with the latest iOS on there, you'll likely need to wait for XBMC to be updated. (I do not know if the firmware can be downgraded; if it can, then you could go that route).

As for whether these are useful, I love my jailbroken ATV2. I use XBMC to stream WatchESPN and Amazon Prime movies, and I use Airplay to stream from my home server. Connecting a computer has its appeal (I considered doing so with a Mac Mini), but this interface is simple enough for my kid to use it, the footprint is low, and the price was nice.

apple tv3 has few processes or services running at the background, which makes it difficult to find a security vulnerability

Apple TV 3 will be JB sooner rather than later. The new jailbreak vulnerability just needs to be adapted for the ATV3.

Just as a follow up to my previous post, posters over at the firecore forums say they are able to downgrade the firmware. Instructions are on the first page, and people on the last page of the thread seem to be indicating they can still go this route to downgrade:

Just out of curiosity. If I jailbreak my iPad 2, install XBMC, and output to my HDTV am I getting the same functionalities of a jailbroken Apple TV 2? Thanks.

the problem is that the new jailbreak vulnerability does not exist on apple tv.

i downgraded an apple tv 2 last week, it will be possible to downgrade as long as apple's signature servers signs the old firmware.

Yes. You can install everything the ATV2 has on your ipad and output it to your tv. It's just not as streamlined...being able to hit the remote and go! But it does work the same

i bought one off of craigslist for $40 a while back. took the time to jailbreak it then sold it on ebay. I got it mainly to watch hulu but the performance was shaky at best.

technically you should, the ipad 2 has A5 chip so could be faster

These ATV2's really need to be plugged in to the router directly. Wifi can be iffy if people close are on the same channel or if you have a weak connection
